COEUR d’ALENE — To strengthen staffing statewide amid a shortage of troopers, the Idaho State Police has extended the application deadline for its next trooper training academy.

The new deadline to apply is Oct. 17. The next training academy begins in January 2026. 

“If you have a desire to serve and make Idaho safer, we want you on our team,” said Capt. Mark Mooney. “There’s no better time to step up, turn your passion for your community into your profession and help uphold the safety and integrity Idahoans expect.” 

The shortage of troopers is especially noticeable in the Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston areas, according to ISP. 

Sgt. Justin Scotch said District 1, which includes the five northern counties, is down about nine troopers. 

“It’s certainly difficult,” Scotch said. “We’re spread thin and we have to prioritize our calls. We have to make sure we have someone available for serious injury and fatality crashes.” 

Scotch said he’s seen the number of recruits dwindle year over year. 

“Law enforcement isn’t a job people are thinking of going into anymore,” he said, adding that pay, public perception of police and other factors all contribute to the downward trend. “Nationally, it’s on a decline over the past decade.” 

Scotch urged people interested in a law enforcement career to contact the ISP. 

“We are open to providing ride-alongs to people who are seriously interested in these positions,” he said. 

The hiring process includes a written exam, physical fitness test, oral interview, background investigation and medical and psychological evaluation. Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens aged 21 or older. They must hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent, possess or be eligible for an Idaho driver’s license and successfully complete all required background checks. 

Recruits who successfully complete all required steps will be paid employees during the 22-week training academy, which begins in January in Meridian. 

ISP is looking to fill urban and rural trooper positions with both new recruits and lateral officers. New recruits can earn a minimum of $30.07 per hour, while lateral applicants can earn higher wages, depending on their years of law enforcement experience.
