PREP ROUNDUP: Lake City boys stun Coeur d'Alene in district opener

COEUR d’ALENE — It was an eight-minute span, but it was enough for Lake City on Wednesday night. 

Senior Sawyer Anderson converted a penalty kick in the 15th minute, then fellow Timberwolves senior Zach Kerns scored an unassisted goal in the 23rd as the Timberwolves beat the host Coeur d’Alene Vikings 2-1 under the lights at Viking Field in Game 1 of a best-of-3 6A District 1 championship series. 

Lake City (8-5-1) can clinch the district’s lone berth to a state play-in match when the series shifts to the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High on Tuesday. 

“I’m proud of how the boys competed on every possession and brought relentless energy on defense against a talented, well-coached team,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “Saturday brings another battle — and we’ll be ready.” 

Junior forward Isaac Lowder scored in the 79th minute for Coeur d’Alene (8-4-1), which beat Lake City 2-1 on Sept. 16 at Lake City High, then 4-0 on Sept. 23 at Coeur d’Alene High. 

Game 3, if necessary, is Tuesday at Coeur d’Alene High.

COEUR d’ALENE – The top-seeded Timberwolves beat the visiting Vikings 4-2 on penalty kicks to win Game 1 of a best-of-3 6A District 1 championship at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“Overall, it was a typical Lake City vs. Coeur d’Alene district game,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We controlled much of the run of play. We just couldn’t find the back of the net. I’m very proud of our players that found another way to win a game.”

Lake City (12-0-1) and Coeur d’Alene (6-5-4) will play Game 2 on Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High. If the Timberwolves win, they will clinch a berth to a state play-in match on Oct. 18 at Lewiston High against the sixth-place team from District 3. If Coeur d’Alene wins, the teams will play at deciding third game at Lake City High next Tuesday.

“Coeur d’Alene did a good job of defending throughout the game,” Ruchti said. “Hats off to them. We need to be better on Saturday, and that starts with me.”

RATHDRUM — Senior Natalee Rose notched a hat trick, senior Karstyn Kiefer and senior Paige Rose had two goals each for the fourth-seeded Hawks in a win over the fifth-seeded Trojans in a loser-out game in the 5A Region 1 tournament at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“We changed our formation a little bit and it worked really well,” said Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge, whose team held Post Falls without a shot on goal. “We were moving the ball really well and talking. The girls did a good job of connecting passes and finished really well today.” 

Lakeland (6-6-3) travels to top-seeded Moscow (9-2-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

“It’s been a long stretch of games, so it was good to see the girls take a few things we discussed and put them into the game tonight,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “I was pleased that even when our touches were off, the effort was still there. Sierra had a great night of possessing, connecting and assisting after finding a few early goals for herself.” 

Coeur d’Alene Charter (9-1-1, 9-0 IML) faces Priest River at The Fields at Real Life on Friday.

PLUMMER — Senior Tylah Lambert had 12 kills, 13 assists, four digs and three aces for the Knights in a 25-15, 27-25, 25-19 sweep of the Timberwolves at Ron Miller Court. 

Senior Rayna Schatz had eight digs and one kill, sophomore Saydee Peone 11 digs, two assists and nine kills, junior Alliesue Hendrickx four digs and two aces for Lakeside (13-1), which is off until districts. 

“Our Lady Knights played another great game,” Lakeside coach Devin Moore said. “Tylah took lots of aggressive swings tonight and did a great job finding holes. Saydee did a great job passing again tonight. She also was sending hard hits down.”

Tekoa-Rosalia is 5-6.

Mullan 

MULLAN — Lauren Voorhees had seven kills, six aces and 13 digs for the Miners JV in a 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13 win over the Tigers at the Mullan Pavilion. 

Mia Stutzke had seven aces and 23 assists, Summer Tuula four kills, nine digs and three aces, Sophia Field five kills and Addison Kunze five aces and eight digs for Wallace, which finished 9-6. 

Avah Blankenship had six aces, three kills and three blocks for Mullan (2-8), which faces Kootenai in a loser-out game in the 1A District 1 tournament at North Idaho College on Oct. 21.
