Falling into season
HAILEY HILL | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 3 months, 2 weeks AGO
North Idaho may see its first frost of the season in the coming days after a mild and mostly sunny start to October.
Temperatures are expected to fall below average over the weekend and remain in the upper 40s to mid-50s for the next several days, according to the National Weather Service in Spokane.
“Areas of frost (are possible) in the morning through Wednesday, particularly (in) sheltered Northeast Washington and North Idaho valleys,” the agency said.
NWS Spokane is also projecting a 40 to 50% chance of above normal precipitation throughout the Inland Northwest over the next several days.
Coeur d’Alene and neighboring communities will most likely see light showers beginning after 5 tonight, with rain peaking Saturday night into Sunday,
Snow levels will also drop to between 4,000 and 5,000-feet Saturday evening and into Sunday, NWS Spokane reported. Lookout Pass in Shoshone County has a 25% chance of seeing snow accumulation of 2 inches.
The potential rainfall comes as the entirety of North Idaho continues to grapple with drought.
The latest map released Thursday from U.S. Drought Monitor shows Kootenai, Shoshone and Benewah counties in “an extreme to exceptional drought.” Meanwhile, Bonner and Boundary counties are faring slightly better in the “severe drought” category.

A sepia-toned photograph of about 30 businessmen hangs in the office of Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber’s President and CEO, Linda Coppess. Though dressed in the fashion of decades past, the men gathered for a purpose that has endured: uplifting area businesses through the Chamber. The photo is a reminder of the Chamber’s 114 years of history, Coppess said in her address to nearly 200 attendees at Tuesday morning’s Breakfast Connect event.
