Kootenai County Sheriff's Office deputy Dale "Caleb" Law died in a UTV accident in the South Fork area of Robinson Creek in Clearwater County, the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office confirmed Saturday morning.
CCSO had received a report at around 1:41 a.m. Friday morning, the Law had not returned home when expected. Response efforts covered a "very large area" from Elk River to Dworshak Reservoir and involved deputies, Search and Rescue, a drone and the Backcountry Medics Helicopter, CCSO said in a statement.
Law's missing UTV was found at approximately noon on Friday near the South Fork of Robinson Creek by hunters who had volunteered to aid in the search.
The operator and sole occupant was located deceased near the UTV and was identified as 43-year-old Law of Hayden. The UTV had rolled down an old logging road and Law was ejected, CCSO said.
Law served with KCSO for 18 years and was promoted to sergeant in 2024.
In a statement posted to social media, Sheriff Bob Norris described Law as "very kind" and always willing to help others. He was also an avid hunter and loved Idaho's great outdoors, he said.
"He is missed by his Sheriff’s Office family already," Norris said. "Our hearts are with his wife and children during this difficult time."
Red and Blue Foundation has set up a memorial account for the Law family at First Interstate Bank.
Donations can be made online at Redbluefoundation.org/donations. All proceeds will go directly to the family.
