NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal men notch sophomore day win over CSI

COEUR d’ALENE — North Idaho College freshman midfielder Sebastiano Casini had a goal and two assists for the Cardinals in a 4-1 win over the College of Southern Idaho in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match at Eisenwinter Field on Saturday. 

Drew Hansen, a sophomore midfielder from Coeur d’Alene High, scored in the 26th minute on an assist from Casini to give NIC a 2-0 lead. 

The guys played fantastic,” NIC coach Brad Williams said. “We’re very happy with how things are coming together at this time of the season.” 

NIC (10-4-1, 6-3-1) travels to face Utah State-Eastern (7-3-2, 6-3-1) of Price, Utah, on Thursday. NIC and USU-Eastern are tied for fourth in the SWAC. The top four teams advance to the Region 18 tournament at the winner of the conference starting on Oct. 30. 

CSI, which is second in the conference, is 7-5-1, 7-2-1.

PRICE, Utah — Allie Ferrin, a sophomore from University High in Spokane, had 10 kills and 15 digs for the Cardinals in an 18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-13 Scenic West Athletic Conference loss to the Eagles. 

Freshman Cynthia Reyes-Valencia had nine kills, sophomore Sydney Strieff seven kills and freshman Olivia Zazuetta — the former Lakeland star — 17 assists for NIC (13-9, 2-3 SWAC), which faces Salt Lake Community College next Friday in Taylorsville, Utah. 

Utah State-Eastern is 15-5, 3-2.

COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman midfielder Hannah Lewis tied the match in the 34th minute for the Cardinals, but a goal by the Golden Eagles early in the second half was the difference in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match at Eisenwinter Field. 

Jael Motalvo the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute for CSI (6-2-3, 5-2-3 SWAC). 

NIC (5-5-3, 5-3-2) travels to Utah State-Eastern (6-4-3, 4-4-3) on Thursday.
