Snow closed the alpine section of the Going-to-the-Sun, likely for the 2025 for the season. The Park Service closed the highway from Avalanche Creek to Rising Sun Saturday at 4 p.m.
Snow fell overnight Saturday and by Sunday night it was even snowing heavily in valley locations like Columbia Falls, but it wasn’t sticking as of 8 p.m.
Glacier also announced the Chief Mountain Road was closed due to the weather.
On the east side side of the Divide there was snow on the ground at St. Mary.
West of the Divide the Noisy Basin Snotel was showing 7 inches of snow and the West Flattop site in Glacier 1.5 inches and Badger Pass, which is south of Marias Pass, was showing 4 inches of snow.
The snow is expected to last into Monday, with sunny and warmer weather Tuesday. Rain and snow returns by Wednesday through the end of the week and the long term forecast predicts highs in the 40s and 50s and lows in the 30s, not a good forecast for melting high elevation snow.
The federal government remains shut down, so services are limited in Glacier. The road crew and other key maintenance workers as well as law enforcement rangers are still apparently working, however.
