MOSES LAKE – We’re about halfway through the college football season. Some teams continue to carry their momentum week to week, while others are trying to turn their season around while they still can. See below where each team currently stands.  

Washington State (3-3) at Ole Miss   

On Saturday, the Cougars almost upset the fourth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels, falling on the road 24-21. Going into halftime, the Cougs trailed 10-7.   

Eckhaus completed 24 of 31 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. He found Landon Wright for a 26-yard score to take a 14-10 third-quarter lead. However, Ole Miss would rally in the fourth quarter and jump out to a 24-14 lead. The Cougs scored one last time but could not put the ball in the endzone again with under a minute left in the game.   

Cougs wide receiver Tony Freeman had a strong showing with nine catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. Right beside him was Wright with two catches for 31 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Isaac Terrell shone with four tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception.   

“We competed for over 60 minutes in the game, I’m proud of the guy's effort. I just told them in the locker room, there are no moral victories, but nobody can question your effort. We’ll learn from it. We’ll get better because we got to come back out this way and compete against another top 25 team in a week,” Head Coach Jimmy Rogers said.   

The Cougars continue their road trip on Oct. 18 when they visit 19th-ranked Virginia at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Eastern Washington (2-4) - Bye week  

The Eagles were off last weekend after defeating the Portland State Vikings at home 35-27 on Oct. 4. The run game shone as the team ran for 333 yards total. Quarterback Nate Bell accounted for 175 of those yards on the ground, too.   

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings scored with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game to keep the score tight. The Vikings were driving late in the game, but Jaylon Jenkins snagged his second interception of the season to clinch the win.    

This Saturday, the Eagles are at home against the Idaho Vandals on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.   

Washington (5-1) vs Rutgers   

Demond Williams Jr had an explosive day on Saturday as he led the Huskies to a 38-19 win over Rutgers. Williams threw for 402 yards, two touchdowns, and ran for 136 yards and two more touchdowns. This performance was a career best for him, and he set a school record for single-game total offense with 538 yards, according to a statement by UW athletics.   

Williams had touchdown passes of 20 and 38 yards to Denzel Boston. His two rushing touchdowns of 11 and 7 yards were the final two scores for the Huskies. The Huskies scored touchdowns on their first four drives of the second half, a streak only broken on the final possession when they ran out the clock. Boston had 98 receiving yards and two touchdowns for Washington, and Dezmen Roebuck caught four passes for 108 yards.  

“Proud of our guys, I thought it was a battle really early, Rutgers came out (explosive) as they always do. Demond Williams is a superstar, the fact that he had the all-time total offense record. He is special; we’ve known that for a lot of years now,” head coach Jedd Fisch said.

Central Washington (5-1) at UT Permian Basin   

The 13th-ranked Wildcats went on the road and defeated the sixth-ranked UTPB Falcons 27-14.   

“We are extremely proud of our young men. They continue to handle adversity extremely well. This is one of the best road wins we've had in the Lone Star Conference. We're excited to get back and get to work on Texas A&M-Kingsville,” head coach Chris Fisk said.   

The Wildcats found themselves in a battle after falling behind 7-3 at halftime. Both teams exchanged possessions in the third quarter before the Wildcats got the ball back.   

As they earned small gains left and right during the drive, Kennedy McGill and Justice Taylor found exceptional small successes on the ground. Taylor broke through for a 24-yard touchdown, and with a David Weber extra point kick, giving them their first lead of the night 10-7, with 1:22 left in the third.  

After the Falcons responded with another touchdown to take a 14-10 lead, the Wildcats moved the ball downfield once again. McGill ran into the end zone for a six-yard rushing touchdown to retake the lead 17-14 late in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats piled on 10 more points to secure the top 15 win.   

The Wildcats were dominant on the run. Taylor rushed for 106 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. McGill made magic with his feet on 16 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown as well.   

The Wildcats return home Oct. 18 to face Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6 p.m.
