BIGFORK — Paeten Gunlock and Gwenna Lustig scored as Bigfork defeated Whitefish 2-1 in a State A soccer tournament play-in game Tuesday evening.

Gunlock opened the scoring for the Valkyries in the 20th minute.

Lustig scored in the 42nd minute to double the advantage.

In stoppage time, Neva Sliman pulled one back for the Bulldogs, who had chances to pull level but couldn’t put a second one past Bigfork keeper Irelynd Vigil.

“It was a championship level match that unfortunately met at the play-in,” Whitefish coach Kelly Ordway said. “With seven freshmen starting this game, the future is bright for Whitefish girls soccer.”

Vigil ended the night with four saves. Whitefish keeper Jackie Solem had six stops.

The Valkyries advance to host Stevensville in the quarterfinal round Saturday at 3 p.m.
