PREP VOLLEYBALL: Sandpoint defeated by Lakeland in four sets

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 15, 2025 11:45 AM

Lakeland 3, Sandpoint 1

RATHDRUM — Sophomore Breecyn Morton chalked up a career-high six aces, junior Marlee Lane recorded a team-high nine kills and the Lady Bulldogs fell in four sets to the Lady Hawks (25-17, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21) in a 5A Inland Empire League game held Tuesday at Hawk Court.

Lane served up three aces of her own while sophomore Carlee Klippel, freshman Ali Gunter, and seniors Hazel Pierce, Belen Gonzales and Alex Appl all registered three kills apiece for Sandpoint, which used a late 7-0 run to capture the second set on the night.

Defensively, Gunter tallied two solo blocks while Appl and Klippel contributed one solo block and one assisted block each. Senior Gretta Beck chipped in a team-high 14 digs, Gonzales 10 digs, Morton five digs and freshman Averi Mire three digs on the evening.

"We struggled defensively last night, which in turn made it hard for our offense to be as effective," Sandpoint High head coach Piper Wahlin said. "We were slow to make adjustments that Lakeland continued to exploit. With a couple tweaks, we'll be ready to take on Lewiston."

Mire and Morton both set up a tied for team-high 12 assists each for Sandpoint (7-9), which travels to Lewiston for their league and regular season finale Thursday.
