Bonners Ferry girls soccer, playing St. Maries on Oct. 7, scored seven goals in a 7-2 win. On the boys side, Bonners Ferry beat Immaculate Conception Academy 5-3 on Oct. 8 to win their fourth game in a row on Senior Night.
Senior and captain Nevaeh Therrien scored, as did junior Nolie Hiatt, senior Alexys Mierke and freshman Abigail VanGesen. Senior Maddie Hart scored two goals. Assists were made by senior Alexys Mierke and freshman Julie Erickson.
Senior Hailie Thompson, the goalie, was on the scoresheet, a rarity in soccer.
Head Coach Emily Winebark said the fun the team plays with contributed to the win.
“You could see the love the girls have for each other during that game and how much we can accomplish when we are working as a team and not individuals,” Winebark said.
The team is a collection of different grades, including several freshmen, so the hope for the Badgers is that they can keep improving over the coming years. The leadership shown by the upperclassmen was invaluable to the team this year, according to Winebark.
“I am proud of how hard the girls have worked this year, especially the seniors in their ability to show patience and leadership, working to coach younger players,” Winebark said.
On Oct. 10, the Badgers lost their final home game of the season 1-0 away to Grangeville. They are 6-7 and 6-4 in conference play. They have scored 33 goals over the course of the season.
During the 5-3 win for the boys, the goals were scored by junior Leandro Renna, senior Logan Archibald, senior Lincoln Hymas, sophomore Josh Warner and junior Peyton Hinthorn.
Junior Trevor Festini and Warner each had one assist.
Renna had an exceptional season, scoring 18 goals in only 16 games. Archibald led the team in assists, with 13. He also scored seven goals. Hymas and Warner each scored eight goals. In total, the team scored 55 goals.
Following the senior night game, Bonners Ferry won against Grangeville 7-0, with four goals from junior Riley Beggarly. Archibald scored a goal and contributed two assists.
The Badgers then lost away to Orofino and ICA to close out the season. Their record is 10-7, 7-3 in conference play.
