MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School Lions (5-2) football team proved their strength at home Thursday evening with a 52-0 victory over Pateros. This victory ties the team with Oroville for third in the Central Washington B conference.

“We came out strong,” said Lions wide receiver Treyson Kast. “We scored a lot of points in the first half. We wanted to get our second team guys in, so that was our primary goal today.

The Lions had a stellar first half where they put up 46 points before halftime and held Pateros scoreless throughout. Coming into the third quarter, the Lions had already begun to run out the clock, putting Anthony Moskvich and Antonio Serrato to work on the ground.

Serrato added another touchdown run in the third quarter after speeding past the Pateros defenders from the 30-yard line. The Lions' defense held on until the very end and prevented Pateros from scoring in the red zone in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to end the game 52-0.

Lions wide receiver James Robertson said the team showed great strength in their balance on offense with their ability to run and throw the ball effectively to earn a significant lead early on.

The key takeaway for the Lions from the game was the importance of playing hard from start to finish, said Kast.

Lions head coach Josh Kast said the team played effectively on all sides of the ball and overall played a very clean game, outside of one penalty that got a touchdown brought back.

“Overall, we executed the game plan tonight,” said coach Kast. “The boys did a good job throwing in wherever they needed.”

During the game, the Lions had one of their starters go down with concussion symptoms. He said that the players who filled that position and those they brought in for the second half continued the grind and stepped up to the role.

Coach Kast said he has been impressed with how well his players have powered through their injuries and stayed strong despite their exhaustion at this point in the season.

“It’s a long season. They’ve got to stay focused on what’s in front of them each week,” he said. “Be prepared, whether they’re doing it on their own or at practice, but overall, I think the kids are doing a good job just sticking to their goals that they have in mind.”

The main goal for the Lions at this point is to stay in the mix for a league title and work their way up the ranks to see where they end up at the end of the season, said coach Kast. As they close in on the end of the regular season, the team is going to work on the team is going to focus preparing for each opponent accordingly and returning a few players who were out with injury.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to have a 5-2 record and get ready for state,” said Robertson.

The Lions’ next game will be on the road this Friday against Bridgeport at 7 p.m.

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tiger Baseball Club (3-1) finished their second matchup of the season as they split a doubleheader with Sunnyside Christian Tuesday evening. “I was pleased with a lot of aspects of the doubleheader,” said Tigers Head Coach David Tempel. “The summertime is all about development and getting some experience. The good part about (Tuesday) is we were in some different situations that we haven’t seen much, so we were able to learn from those and use those to our advantage.” Sunnyside was the first on the board during game one as they put up two runs in the top of the second inning. The Tigers responded at the bottom of the third as they put up five runs to claim the lead.
