PREP FOOTBALL: Lake City punches back, downs Lewiston
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 months, 1 week AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — In a bout between two Inland Empire League heavyweights, it was going to come down to who could land the final blow.
As it turned out, it was a guy that wasn’t even supposed to get the ball in that situation.
Junior quarterback Britton Johnston scrambled and hit sophomore Landon Leveque on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 6:12 remaining, the lone score of the night, as the Lake City Timberwolves beat the Lewiston Bengals 6-0 in a nonleague game at Van Troxel Field on Friday.
“Britton really got things going on that drive and was going toward the goal line,” Lake City coach Byron Hout said. “The ball wasn’t supposed to go to Landon, but Britton threw a rocket and got it to him.”
Lake City (2-6) concludes the regular season at Post Falls on Thursday.
Lewiston (3-5) travels to Lakeland next Friday. If Lewiston wins, the Bengals will clinch the 5A IEL title. If Lakeland wins, the Hawks, Bengals and Sandpoint will all be tied at 1-1 in league and compete in a Kansas tiebreaker to determine the automatic bid to the state playoffs.
Junior Brayden Van Leuven had 24 carries for 106 yards for Lake City, which was able to run out the clock after a fourth-down stop on a speed option play with 4:03 remaining, as Van Leuven broke an 18-yard run with less than a minute remaining.
“Brayden was really special to watch tonight,” Hout said. “On that fourth-down play, Damien Brown was slow-playing the quarterback and Dayton Fletcher made the tackle. We were trying to get him to pitch the ball on our pace and Dayton made a great play, but he doesn’t do that if Damien doesn’t do his job.”

MOSCOW — The visiting Tigers were driving to cut the deficit to one possession late in the fourth quarter, but turned the ball over on downs, allowing Moscow to run out the clock for the Intermountain League win at Bear Field.
“We got the ball down to the 5-yard line late and just couldn’t punch it in,” said Timberlake coach Kelly Amos, whose team intercepted three passes in the game. “Defensively, we had a series of mistakes in the first quarter that cost us. Late in the game, we just couldn’t get the ball back.”
Junior running back Westin Herbert ran for two touchdowns for Timberlake, including a 23-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
Timberlake (1-7, 0-1 IML) hosts Bonners Ferry in IML play next Friday to conclude the regular season. It was the regular season finale for Moscow (6-3, 1-1), which lost to the Badgers on Oct. 10 in Bonners Ferry.
“Our only possibility of making the playoffs is winning next week to force a three-way tie,” Amos said. “Losing tonight makes it a hard deal, but in a league of three, it’s tough to make it easy when you lose a game.”
