PREP VOLLEYBALL: Sandpoint swept in district tournament opener

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 20, 2025 4:00 PM

Lakeland 3, Sandpoint 0

RATHDRUM — Freshman Averi Mire set up a team-high 24 assists, senior Belen Gonzales contributed a team-high 11 kills, but the No. 3 Lady Bulldogs came up short against the No. 2 Lady Hawks (25-23, 25-20, 27-25) in a 5A District 1-2 first round matchup held Saturday at Hawk Court.

Offensively, junior Marlee Lane and senior Hazel Pierce added five kills each while sophomore Carlee Klippel recorded four of her own. Lane registered an ace, as did freshman Hailey Gion in what was her first career varsity appearance.

On the defensive side of the net, freshman Abigail Williams chipped in a team-high seven digs, Gonzales, Mire, and senior Gretta Beck four digs for Sandpoint, which took Lakeland to extra points in the third set. Klippel, Pierce and Lane all had two total blocks, one solo and one assisted, and senior Alex Appl had a solo block on the night.

Following the guidance of a bracket published by Idahosports.com, it was reported that Saturday's game was a loser-out game with the winner advancing to a best-of-three district tournament series. After further review, the league has 1.5 bids to state this year.

No. 3 Sandpoint (7-11) will host No. 4 Moscow (13-14), which lost to No. 1 Lewiston by a score of 3-2 this past Saturday, for a 5A District 1-2 loser-out game on Tuesday. The winner will play the loser of the district championship match between No. 1 Lewiston (16-7) and No. 2 Lakeland (14-12) for a chance to advance to a state play-in game.
