Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 months, 1 week AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — The top-seeded Coeur d’Alene Vikings moved one step closer to state with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-18 victory over the second-seeded Post Falls Trojans in the first match of a best-of-3 series for the 6A District 1 title Monday at Viking Court.
Senior Kaylee Paulson had 16 kills and 11 digs for Coeur d’Alene (22-3), Gianna Callari added 12 kills, 12 digs and two aces, Hannah Shafer 28 assists and two blocks, Camryn Farrar 13 digs and two blocks, Embree McKeown 13 digs, Bridget Maiani 13 digs, Eva Callari eight assists, Jovie Le eight kills and four blocks.
“Our middles had a standout performance — they put up a solid block and were aggressive at the net,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Our setters did a great job distributing the ball, which allowed our hitters to find gaps and work around the block. We also had a solid performance from all three of our seniors (Paulson, Farrar and Gianna Callari), who brought leadership and consistency when we needed it most. It was a great team win against a relentless Post Falls squad.”
For Post Falls (20-8), Zuri Blood had nine kills and two aces, Reese DeGraw-Tryall seven kills and three blocks, Lucy Carr 14 assists and 10 digs, Claire Ziegler 12 assists, Mia Garr, Jade Laos and Teresa Smith 10 digs each, Tiffany Foxx and Annabelle Tucker two blocks each.
“We didn’t play our best tonight,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “We had a stretch in the second set where we played the way we have most of the season, but just couldn’t sustain it through the rest of the match. We’ll make a few adjustments and get ready for the rematch on Wednesday.”
Match 2 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Arena at Post Falls.

“We came out a little flat and made more serving errors than we would have liked in the first set,” Timberlake coach Lisa Gardom said. “After the nerves went away, we settled in and executed well. Our serve receive and our defense was very strong. They played connected and kept the momentum throughout the night. I’m very proud of this team and the work they are putting in late in the season.”
