John Heller, 91, was born on Aug. 5, 1934, and passed away peacefully in his home on Oct. 17, 2025, with his beloved wife by his side. He fought a valiant battle until the very end, with his faithful companion Zoe never leaving his side.
John proudly served his country for 30 years in the United States Army, retiring with the distinguished rank of Bird Colonel. His service began at the remarkable age of 15 when he enlisted by lying about his age. Throughout his military career, he completed tours in both Korea and Vietnam, earning the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him.
Though John had many chapters in his life, the greatest was the 34 years he shared with his wife Gail — the love of his life and his truest partner. Together, they were able to travel and share many great adventures, building a lifetime of memories filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
John had a deep affection for his Yorkie dogs and his brandy, both of which brought him comfort and joy throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Heller; his children, Char (Carl) Schameideskamp, John Heller Jr., Lorrie (Dave) LaGraffe, and Steve (Mona) Needham; and his stepchildren, Colette (Glen) Bertrand and John Clark. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held in the spring, per John’s request.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home is caring for the family.
