Gypsy Theatre Guild presents “Barrymore,” a two-person play by William Luce.

Directed by Karen Kolar, the play centers on actor John Barrymore, played by Tony Nelson, in the twilight of his life as he rehearses for a comeback performance of “Richard III.” Frank, Barrymore’s loyal but exasperated stage manager, played by Larry Lefcourt, is a voice from the wings, a presence in the shadows and a mirror to the legendary actor’s unraveling genius.

The play is a poignant blend of humor, regret and reflection, requiring its lead to embody   Barrymore’s flamboyant persona and the vulnerability beneath the bravado.

Nelson rises to the challenge, shifting seamlessly between Barrymore’s booming theatricality and his quieter, introspective moments, with a command of the stage through every gesture and line, impeccable timing, nuanced delivery and emotional resonance.

Lefcourt’s interpretation of Frank is a “masterclass in restraint.” He performs the role as a man quietly weathering the storm of Barrymore’s decline, delivering lines with concern, disappointment, affection and a touch of weariness. When Barrymore veers off into drunken tangents or forgotten lines, Frank's voice cuts through the haze — not harshly, but firmly. He refuses to walk away from the fading star he admires.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, 7 and 8. There will also be 2 p.m. performances on Nov. 2 and 9. All performances will be held at the Red Lion Inn, ballroom A. The Red Lion is located at 20 N. Main St., Kalispell

Tickets are $28.29, which includes service fees, and may be purchased online at www.flatheadtickets.com or at the door.
