PREP CROSS COUNTRY: A perfect day for Coeur d'Alene boys ... Vikings claim fifth straight district title in state qualifying meet

LEWISTON ORCHARDS — Another effort like this next Saturday at the Lewis-Clark State Cross Country Course, and there will be another reason to celebrate for the Coeur d’Alene High boys cross country team. 

Coeur d’Alene notched a perfect score, cruising to the 6A District 1 championship with the top five finishers on Wednesday in the state qualifying meet. 

The state meet in all five classifications is next Saturday at Lewiston Orchards.

6A: Coeur d’Alene senior Mitchell Rietze was the district champion in 15 minutes, 42 seconds, with the host of his teammates coming in one second later. The Vikings have won two straight state team titles. 

Lake City senior Conner Johnson qualified individually after finishing sixth. 

Post Falls’ boys also qualified for state by finishing runner-up. 

Post Falls senior Talia Bonville won the girls race in 17:52, helping the Trojans girls qualify for state. 

Coeur d’Alene, which had four of the seven state qualifiers, won a third-straight regional title.  

Lake City junior Madison Zimmerman finished sixth to qualify individually for state. 

5A: Lakeland junior Frank McCarthy was second in the boys race in 15:44, with junior Parker Sterling eighth and senior Charlie Mattila ninth to qualify for state next Saturday. 

Freshman Olivia Meredith was the top local finisher in the girls race, finishing fourth, with junior Maddison Chapple sixth for Lakeland, which qualified for state after finishing second to Sandpoint. 

Sandpoint finished tied with Moscow for the boys regional title, but won the tiebreaker with its fifth runner finishing higher (12th) than Moscow’s (17th). 

Moscow senior Cora Crawford won the girls regional title in 19 minutes. 

2A: Kootenai freshmen Juniper Stevenson (seventh) and Hazel Stevenson (10th) advanced to state after finishing in the top 10 of the 2A District 1-2 meet in Lewiston Orchards.

Kootenai senior Ashton Lewis also qualified, finishing 11th.
