PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Sandpoint boys, girls continue streaks as district champions

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 23, 2025 10:15 AM

LEWISTON — Junior Jack Lovin ran the third-fastest time in school history, three different Lady Bulldogs cracked the all-time top 20 list, and both the Sandpoint boys and girls cross country teams grabbed 5A District 1-2 Championship titles Wednesday at Lewis-Clark State College.

Competing at the Lewiston Orchards, Lovin captured a bronze medal amongst the 69-runner field with a time of 15 minutes, 48 seconds, which beat out 2014 graduate and assistant coach Sam Levora's best high school time by .7 seconds.

Sophomore Kai Budensiek posted a new personal best and is now No. 11 all-time as he finished sixth in 16 minutes, 14 seconds. Senior Paul Kent (10th, 16:28) ran to a season best,  and sophomore Hobbes Conley (11th, 16:41), junior Trace Evans (12th, 16:43) and freshmen Cy Marshall (13th, 16:52) and Landon Connor (14th, 16:56) all ran to new personal bests in consecutive order for Sandpoint's boys, which captured their 13th straight district title after defeating Moscow via a fifth-runner tiebreaker.

Sophomore Riley Shadel rounded out an impressive day with a new personal best time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds to finish 17th overall.

"It was good to see our top seven guys running in the 16's; that's some real quality times for a team this young yet," Sandpoint High head coach Mike Ehredt said, also noting his team was without standout sophomore Wyatt Lemon due to injury. "We enjoy the competition with Moscow. They have a really great program and their coach is amazing. It's unfortunate someone has to lose, but of course, I'm happy we kept our streak going. I think we could very well see two North Idaho teams coming back from state with trophies."

For the girls, junior Elizabeth Storms grabbed a silver medal amongst the 54-runner field with a new personal best time of 19 minutes, 30 seconds, which ranks as the 13th fastest in school history. Sophomores Delaney Barron (third, 19:39) and Ruthie Laughridge (fifth, 19:43) also ran to new personal bests and top 20 times of all-time as they placed amongst the top five for Sandpoint's girls, which defeated runner-up Lakeland by 20 points to win their third straight district title and 12th in the last 13 years.

Sophomore Lillian Grant placed eighth with a new personal best time of 20 minutes, 34 seconds while Vivian Schuck (11th, 20:46) and Sophie Brubaker (12th, 20:59) continue to impress as they ran new personal bests of their own and finished as the No. 2 and No. 3 freshman at the meet.

Sophomore Sienna Szabo (16th, 21:33) ran to a new personal best and senior Hannah Ricks (18th, 21:57) ran to a new a season best and were among the top 20 on the afternoon.

"We pretty much called that as we expected," Ehredt said of his team's dominant performance. "We had three girls under 20 minutes, which we haven't had in quite a few years. They have a legit shot at making the podium at state."

Ehredt said despite his team's youthfulness, they got the job done once again. After all, the Bulldogs know a district title is something that is earned, not given, every single year.

"We never underestimate anyone; we're not entitled to a district trophy," he noted. "They're young, disciplined, and committed. They see the importance of working to get to where they want to go. We just try to keep them motivated and excited, loving the sport, loving the competition, and let everything else take care of itself. Really proud of every single one of them."

Sandpoint will look to further their season successes at the 5A State Championship, set to be held Saturday, Nov. 1, also at Lewis-Clark State College.
