BONNERS FERRY — It was simple for the Timberlake boys cross country team on Thursday at Bonners Ferry High.

Stick together early. Then get going.

Timberlake junior Caleb Royce led the Tigers to a perfect score, winning the 4A District 1 title in 17 minutes, 41 seconds.

“The plan was to run together as a pack in the first mile, and then take off and keep the gap close,” said Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler, who started the program in 2004. “There’s a lot of good leadership within that group and it was nice because they were able to give a good effort, but not an all-out effort.”

It is Timberlake’s 16th district title in 22 seasons.

Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Annabelle Carr, who won the state 4A title last year, won the girls district title in 18:45. The Panthers also qualified their girls team after finishing runner-up.

Bonners Ferry advanced its boys team to state at the Lewis-Clark State Cross Country Course next Saturday in Lewiston Orchards.
