A Post Falls High School English teacher has been selected as a 2025 Vandal Outstanding Educator.

The University of Idaho’s College of Education, Health and Human Sciences announced the 2025 Vandal Outstanding Educator Award winners Tuesday. Post Falls' Christopher Johnson is one of six educators across Idaho to receive this honor.

Nominated by U of I students, these K-12 educators have made lasting impacts by inspiring a love for learning, encouraging students to reach their full potential and shaping their personal and academic growth.

"With more than four decades of teaching experience, Christopher Johnson has left an indelible mark on generations of students through his dual credit English courses," the announcement said. "As an affiliate faculty member of U of I’s Department of English, he has introduced hundreds of students to college-level learning and critical inquiry. Johnson’s classes challenge students to think deeply and engage meaningfully with literature and ideas. His commitment to academic excellence and mentorship reflects the best of Idaho education and the Vandal spirit of curiosity and lifelong learning."

A graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School and Washington State University, Johnson is in his 46th year of teaching. He teaches honors sophomore English and dual credit English 101 and 175 in conjunction with the U of I.

"I have always loved the subject of English and find it very rewarding to assist students in becoming confident writers and exposing them to pieces of classic literature that can have a profound effect on their lives," Johnson said Thursday. "I am extremely grateful to my University of Idaho liaison, Margot Volem, and my former students who nominated me for this great honor."

Principal Mark Mason said Johnson has taught U of I dual credit classes at Post Falls High for a number of years.

“Chris represents Post Falls High School very well," Mason said. "He’s well deserving of this award."

The six honorees will be recognized with a special halftime ceremony today during the Vandal football game at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome at 828 W. Pullman Road, Moscow. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Family Promise of North Idaho's Starry Night will be April 24

The road from Portland to North Idaho was long as Josh France and his family sought a better life. About four years ago, he and his wife, Brooke, had a little girl, and another baby was soon on the way. "I was telling Brooke, 'I don't think we should raise our kids here (in Portland),' because it's getting bad out there," Josh said.

Press article, community give boost to program that feeds kids in need

Nearly a month ago, The Press reported on the Coeur d'Alene Backpack Program's dire need for funding to continue to feed kids in need when school is out for weekends and holidays. Volunteers who run the nonprofit program feared it would end at the close of the 2025-2026 school year if they could not drum up enough support. People responded to the news with immense generosity. Within 24 hours of the March 10 article being published, program leaders reported an outpouring from a community that refuses to let kids go hungry. As of Thursday, about $55,000 of the roughly $100,000 needed to continue the program had been raised.
