FARMINGTON, Utah — It was almost a clean sweep for the Montana Grizzlies football team.
Three Grizzlies landed weekly awards from the Big Sky Conference, following No. 3 Montana’s 49-35 win at Sacramento State Friday evening: Michael Wortham on offense, Peyton Wing on defense and Ty Morrison on special teams.
Morrison shared the award with Eastern Washington punter Landon Ogles: Morrison, a senior out of San Valencia, Calif., went 7-for-7 on APT kicks, sent four of his seven kickoffs for touchdowns and averaged 37.3 yards on three punts. More importantly, he fired a 28-yard pass to Ian Finch on a fake punt that led to a Wortham touchdown.
Wortham had 238 all-purpose yards against the Hornets, including 89 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. The senior from North Highlands, Calif., which is in Sacramento’s back yard, also caught five passes for 80 yards and another TD. He also had a 44-yard kickoff return and leads FCS with 178.8 all-purpose yards per game.
Wortham was also named the FCS offensive player of the week by Stats Perform.
Wing, a junior linebacker out of Summer, Wash., tied the Big Sky’s single-game high with three sacks against Sac State. One of those sacks came on fourth down; he had six tackles and helped the Griz defense limit the Hornets to 141 rushing yards, well below their average.
Ogles, Eastern’s senior punter, averaged 44.5 yards on 10 punts in the Eagles’ 23-20 win at Weber State Saturday. He put five punts inside the Wildcat 20-yard line; three of his kicks went over 50 yards.
Fourth-ranked Montana State, which beat Cal Poly 34-17 Saturday, didn’t nominate anyone for the weekly awards according to the conference website.
