Bel Canto presenting operatic comedy 'Kaputt!'

Bel Canto is taking opera somewhere you’ve never seen it go — infused with imagination, humor and gusto.
Under the care of Karin Wedemeyer, the visionary behind Bel Canto and its artistic endeavors, a fresh approach to opera is emerging — one that challenges the perception that opera is stuffy or reserved for the few. Wedemeyer, a German-born professional opera singer and founder of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint, created Bel Canto to breathe fresh air into an art form she is determined to keep alive.
Following successful productions such as "Tortellini," "Olivia’s Lament," and "Moonlight," Bel Canto proudly presents the debut of Karin Wedemeyer’s newest original work, "Kaputt!"
The premiere will take place at Little Carnegie, 110 Main St., with back-to-back performances Saturday, Nov. 1, and Sunday, Nov. 2, starting at 5 p.m. Audiences will be invited on an immersive artistic journey, complete with a few delightful surprises.
"Kaputt!" explores the complex and often ambiguous relationship between humans and technology, touching on the tension, absurdity, and vulnerability that arise when the digital world collides with our personal lives. The show’s hallmark is its playful humor and audience engagement beyond the stage.
As part of the behind-the-scenes production and planning, the public was invited to bring old or outdated electronics — such as computers, phones, cables, and monitors — to be used as stage décor and then recycled following the performance. “I love the idea of combining art with something useful, like recycling and in a way help ‘recycle’ opera as an art form, by welcoming and engaging new audiences” says Wedemeyer.
“Let us help you change your mind!” has become something of a rallying cry for Bel Canto, whose audiences are treated to operatic experiences that are as thought-provoking as they are entertaining.
Now in its tenth year, Bel Canto celebrates a decade of bold, imaginative performances that push singers to new heights. Featuring a dynamic ensemble of professionals, students and emerging artists, this production promises the originality, wit, and compelling musical storytelling that have become the hallmark of Bel Canto. Secure your seat now for an unforgettable night on stage.
