COLUMBIA BASIN — The grandchildren are back in school, the summer family visits are done and there are plenty of things to get out and do this month. Here are a few: 


Sept. 4 


Battle of the Badges 

The Moses Lake Police Department takes on the Grant County Sheriff's Office in a charity softball game, with children’s activities and raffles on the side. All proceeds support MLPD Community Outreach program. Tailgate at 5 p.m., first pitch at 6:30 p.m. at Larson Baseball Field, 2501  W. Broadway Ave., Moses Lake. Info: 509-764-3887. 


Sept. 5 


Walk, Beer, Flock Cancer 0.5K! 

Join Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation for a half-kilometer walk, run, skip, roll or stroll along the park trail by Moses Lake, then rest after the exhausting workout with cold beer or soft drinks. Pink or flamingo-related attire is suggested but not required. A percentage of all purchases will go to the CBCF. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Moore Brewing Company. 302 W. Broadway Ave., Moses Lake. Dueling Pianos: Felix and Fingers 

Two talented pianists go head-to-head in a friendly competition, delivering an unforgettable live music experience. This isn’t your average night out; expect singing, comedy and a rowdy good time. Tickets $30 per person, which includes an appetizer buffet and access to the private patio and bar. Must be 21 or older. Seating starts at 5 p.m., buffet opens at 6 p.m. and show begins at 6:30 p.m. at Michael’s Market & Bistro, 221 W. Broadway, Moses Lake. Info: 509-765-4177. 


Live music with Mitch McVicker 

Contemporary Christian musician Mitch McVicker has 13 full-length albums and won a 1999 GMA Dove Award for the song “My Deliverer,” co-written with the late Rich Mullins. His quirky and inventive approach includes insightful song lyrics, unconventional instruments, and profound storytelling to connect the everyday with the otherworldly. Sept. 10-13 


Othello Fair 

Four-day county fair featuring parade, carnival, food and craft booths, livestock exhibits and more. This year’s theme is “Sunflower Yields & Scarecrow Fields.” Info: www.othellofair.org. 


Sept. 12 


‘Don Nutt: A Tortured Land’ 

Opening of the exhibition by Coulee City artist Don Nutt. Nutt’s oil paintings capture the spirit of Grant County and its landscape, people and creatures. Free reception with refreshments and a chance to meet the artist. 4-7 p.m. at the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St. Info: 509-764-3830.   


Sept. 13 


Farmer Consumer Awareness Day 

Farmer Consumer Awareness Day is a day for farmers to show how food is produced, and for consumers to learn. The festival includes a parade, farm equipment display, quilt show, vendors, tours, fun run, car show and more. 9 a.m. at Quincy Middle School, 16 Sixth Ave. SE, Quincy. Info: www.quincyfcad.org. 


Hartline Community Days  

Parade, kids’ games, vendors, pickleball and bean bag tournaments, and a donation-only lunch. 10:30 a.m. at Hartline City Park. Info: 509-641-0323. 


Art on Third  

See local artists and their works gathered in downtown Moses Lake. There will be crystal artists, jewelry, painting and photography and more, as well as opportunities for guests to make their own works of art. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at East Third Avenue and South Alder Street, Moses Lake. Sip & Stroll  

Explore local businesses, taste Washington wineries, cideries and spirits, and listen to local musicians. There will also be a car show with classics, customs, low riders and more. 1-5 p.m. at Sinkiuse Square, 216 W. Third Ave., Moses Lake. Info: downtownmoseslake.com.  


Care Fair  

Local nonprofits and service organizations are ready to show what they’re all about and ways to give back to the community. Noon to 5 p.m. at 313 S. Ash St., Moses Lake. Info: caremoseslake.com/care-fair.  


Sept. 18 


Friends of the Moses Lake Library Book Sale 

Peruse through gently used books and take home a new treasure for your home library. Proceeds go to help fund library programs. 2-6 p.m. at the Moses Lake Public Library, 418 E. Fifth Ave. Info: 509-771-7634. 


Sept. 18-21 


Deutschesfest  

Four-day celebration of German heritage with parade, bed races, German food and beer garden, live music and more. Info: www.deutschesfest.net.  


Sept. 19 


Wototo Children’s Choir 

Children’s choir from Uganda, East Africa, will perform songs from their album “Better Days – There Is Hope.” 7 p.m. at Moses Lake Alliance Church, 1100 N. Grape Drive. Info: 509-765-6656. 


Sept. 20 


Royal Drill Team Golf Scramble 

Come out for a day of golf, camaraderie, and friendly competition. On-course enhancements, thrilling challenges and plenty of prizes for all skill levels. All proceeds benefit the Royal Drill team. $400 per four-person team. Info and registration: 509-855-2499. 


Sept. 25 


Bingo fundraiser 

$5 suggested donation to play. Bring a canned food item to make chili – kidney beans, chili beans, canned tomatoes, chili seasoning and so on – and get an extra raffle basket ticket for some fun prizes. Proceeds support Care Moses Lake. Doors open at 4 p.m., bingo begins at 6 p.m. at Moses Lake Taproom, 801 N. Evelyn Drive. Info: 509-707-0052. 


Mug Design Workshop 

Not super crafty, but want to make something fun? This workshop is for you. Learn a simple, repeatable process to create your own custom festive mug. All the supplies are provided and there are all different shapes and sizes of mugs to choose from – just bring yourself and your creativity. Sept. 26 


Introduction to the Indigenous Art Form of Beading 

Local indigenous artist Amanda Keewatinawin will host a workshop on the indigenous art form of beading and how to create your own beaded fringe earrings. Hand-curated kits and instructions will be provided for each participant along with a brief history of indigenous beadwork. Ages 18 and older. 5:30-8 p.m. at the Moses Lake Public Library, 418 E. Sept. 27 


White Trail Grange Car Show 

Free fun for the whole family. Check out classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors. Grange youth will sell root beer floats and Italian sodas, and Tacos El Tapatio will serve up food. A heavy yard art tractor will be raffled off. Bulb Your Enthusiasm! 

Want a garden that bursts into color next spring? The secret starts underground. This lighthearted, hands-on workshop teaches the simple art of planting bulbs that reward you with tulips, daffodils and other dazzling blooms year after year. Each attendee gets bulbs to plant and a 20% discount day of class towards more bulbs or bulb amendments. $50 per person; space is limited. 11 a.m. at Blue Rouge Garden & Nursery, 2114 W. UMANI Festival  

UMANI is a major community-wide collaboration between individuals and many of the largest cultural institutions in our area to celebrate our community’s Hispanic heritage. Free activities include access to a low rider car show, music, barbers, artists, creative workshops, crafts and games for families, resource booths, vendors, food trucks and lucha wrestling. Noon to 6 p.m. at Sinkiuse Square, 216 W. Third Ave, Moses Lake. Info: downtownmoseslake.org. 

    The UMANI Festival will feature music and dance from many different Hispanic cultures Sept. 27.
