Miners ready for bounce-back year

WALLACE — The Lady Miners won more than they lost a season ago, but the real question for head coach Katie Bauer is, can they get past Genesis Prep?
After back-to-back seasons qualifying for the state tournament, Bauer’s 2024 season was bookended by losses to the Jaguars, who went 4-0 against Wallace. This year, she hopes that a lot more experience will make the difference.
“We are optimistic about our chances for advancing to the state tournament,” Bauer said. “We have five returning seniors that bring experience and a competitive spirit.”
The Miners will go as their best players do, with heavy expectations resting on the shoulders of seniors Kylee Phillips, Megan Hull, Anna Rehnborg and Aubrey Birdsell, as well as junior Kayden Stutzke.
“Kylee will be a key contributor, bringing dynamic and aggressive play to the court,” Bauer said. “Megan, who led our 2023 team in kills, is looking strong and ready to make an impact after missing last season due to injury. Aubrey and Kayden will play pivotal roles as our setters, and Anna, our libero, should not be overlooked.”
Bauer is confident that her team can score with the best of them, but she will be faced with replacing the team’s two best defensive forces from a season ago.
“Our offensive attack and serving are key strengths heading into the season,” she said. “We lost both of our leading blockers from last year, so we will need to focus on strengthening that area moving forward.”
The Scenic Idaho League gets one berth into the 2A state tournament. Lakeside, although pesky, hasn’t been much of a threat to Wallace or Genesis Prep over the past couple of seasons. Genesis Prep is only returning four players from last year’s roster, which effectively puts Wallace in the driver’s seat for this season.
“Beyond postseason goals, we are committed to fostering a positive team culture and growing the sport in our district,” Bauer said. “With a smaller roster this year, building stronger unity throughout the high school program is a priority.”
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATION: The Lady Miners will make their return to the state tournament after winning the league and district championships.
