The Wolfpack put on a defensive clinic on Tuesday night at Legends Stadium as both Glacier teams kept a clean sheet and held possession for the majority of the game in the first crosstown battle of the fall.

From the opening whistle, Glacier put constant pressure on Flathead to blank the Bravettes 5-0. The boys put used a man advantage to win 9-0.

Avi Schmautz, a transfer from Flathead, scored her first career hat trick for the Wolfpack in her first match against her former squad.

“I think it took us awhile to flow into the game, after two goals I think we found feet more then playing balls in space, and that helped us. It was a good match to rebound off of a very disappointing game against Sentinel,” said Glacier head coach Doug Mello.

The pressure was constant for the Bravettes but they were unable to break Glacier’s defense down.

Schmautz scored her first goal in the 13th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. She followed that up with another deep strike into the right side of the net to double their score in the 28th minute. In the 43rd minute, she finished her hat trick when Flathead was unable to clear the ball.

“It felt so weird, it was everybody I knew and all these people playing in different positions,” said Schmautz. “It’s really fun seeing everybody and there was a lot of camaraderie, so that was really awesome.”

In the 45th minute Neve Travis crushed a ball into Flathead goalkeeper, Adeline Schneider. Schneider got a hand to it, but the shot rolled above her hands into the top of the goal.

Lucy Halloway scored on a free kick in the 65th minute to extend the lead to 5-0.

“We’ve got a number of players that can attack and you’re going to see us scoring more goals as we go along and get used to each other a little better,” said Mello. “Taking away from it is just, we’re going to build on the fact that it was crosstown, it’s always a tough match and it was.”

“Even if we are young, we are a very well put together team,” Glacier keeper and captain Silas Young said. “So, we’re strong and we’re ready for anything that approaches us.”

In the early minutes, the Braves were able to hold their ground and Midfielder, Gavin Hammer, had a header sail just above the bar.

In the 11th minute, Flathead goalkeeper Alex Miller made a key save on a wide-open Wolfpack look to keep the match scoreless.

“The first 30 minutes was a great soccer match for both sides, Glacier had a little bit more of possession, but we had our moments within that part of the game,” said Flathead head coach John Lacey.

Glaciers’ Zander Schmautz finally broke through for the Wolfpack, cleaning up a rebounded shot and slotting the ball into the left corner in the 18th minute.

Moments later, the game would change drastically after emotions flared and a Flathead player was sent off with a red card after a physical altercation with a Glacier defender.

“Soccer’s an 11 on 11 game, and when you go down a guy, it’s really difficult. Once the dam broke it was really hard.” said Lacey.

In the final moments before halftime, Glacier forward Liam Swank dribbled past his defender and lofted a shot over the keepers’ reach and gave the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead headed into the break.

Forward, Brecken Evenson, found the net in the 42nd minute after a perfect through ball pass in-between Flathead defenders.

Schmautz scored his second goal to extend the lead to 4-0, with a shot that was from over 40 feet away that bounced off a Braves’ defender back.

Tayton Hardman and Kyler Hardman each had a breakaway goal for Glacier to make the match 6-0.

The goals continued to fall in for Glacier from Hardman, Issac Weeks and Liam Swank, who scored his second of the game.

“First half we came out a little rough, we were slow just trying to force it. Then we found a rhythm. Young said. “Some events happened that didn’t need to, we’re not that type of team, but we move through it, move forward as a team and just put the goals together.”
