Sandpoint Trailblazers open season at Crosscut Classic

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Sandpoint Trailblazers "Composite" mountain biking team braved fast descents, elevation, and technical climbs as they garnered multiple podium finishes at the Crosscut Classic and Crosscut Short Course Double Header held Saturday and Sunday at the Crosscut Mountain Sports Center.

For the boys, Trent Roberts placed fifth and fourth, respectively, in his races in the varsity division. Nolan Tuohy grabbed two golds, winning the seventh grade division on both days. Miles Burns, after a third-place day one finish, earned a gold on day two after overcoming a mechanical issue.

"The race was pretty hard and challenging at certain parts," Burns, who competed in the eighth grade division, said. "There were parts where I would get dropped by the leaders. I found my determination, and I felt I needed to focus on the downhill and it paid off with the top seat at the podium."

For the girls, Theresa Hurt won the eighth grade division on back-to-back days for a pair of gold medals.

The Saturday course was 3.75 miles with 356 feet of climbing. Sunday’s course was identical to Saturday’s except that the outer part of the loop was cutoff, making it approximately 2.5 miles with 266 feet of climbing.

The Sandpoint Trailblazers, which compete in NICA's Montana Interscholastic Cycling League, will return to action Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Herron Hustle, set to be held at Herron Park in Kalispell.
