WAHLUKE SCHOOL DISTRICT DIRECTOR: Candidates Q&A

MATTAWA – There are two candidates running for the Wahluke School District Director District 5 position. The candidates are Elia Mendoza and board president and incumbent Luke Jenne.  

Both candidates were given the questions below and given identical deadlines and word count restrictions for their answers. Jenne did not respond within the given deadline of Aug. 29 at noon, which resulted in his answers not being published. 

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what motivated you to run for the Wahluke School Board? 

MENDOZA: I immigrated to Mattawa at the age of 10, where I experienced firsthand the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language. Those early experiences shaped my deep commitment to education and community service. For the past eight years, I have worked in public service, currently with the Washington State Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises. As a single mother, small business owner, and author of Silent Strength, I know the importance of resilience, representation, and advocacy. I also serve on the Washington State Women’s Commission, Economic Well-Being Committee, where I work to advance equity and economic opportunity for women and families. Running for the Wahluke School Board is a continuation of my lifelong commitment to uplifting others. I want to ensure every student in our district has access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive and succeed. 

Q: What is your vision for the future of education in the Wahluke School District and what changes would you prioritize? 

MENDOZA: My vision for the Wahluke School District is that every student graduates fully equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed—whether they choose college, technical training, or entrepreneurial paths. Education should prepare students not just academically, but also to thrive in life and contribute to their community. I believe parents and the community are essential partners in this mission. My priority is to strengthen parental and community involvement by creating transparent communication about the state of the district and actively including families in decision-making. I would work to establish safe, welcoming spaces where parents feel informed, supported, and empowered to share honest feedback. By fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, we can build stronger connections between schools, families, and the community. Together, we can ensure that every student has access to opportunities, resources, and support systems that allow them to reach their highest potential. 

Q: If elected, what are the top three issues you plan to address? How would you do so and why are these issues important to you? 

MENDOZA: Boosting Parental and Community Involvement – I’ll establish open forums, surveys, and decision-making committees to ensure families and stakeholders help shape school policies and budgets. Stronger engagement leads to better trust and more effective resource allocation. 

Ensuring Fiscal Responsibility – I’ll prioritize transparent budgeting, cost-efficient spending, and strategic investments to address the district’s financial health. A stable budget allows us to support teacher salaries, facility upgrades, and student programs without wasteful spending. 

Expanding CTE and Skills-Based Learning – I’ll push for partnerships with local industries and colleges to grow career-focused programs in fields like trade, tech, and healthcare. These opportunities give students hands-on experience, preparing them for high-demand jobs and strengthening our workforce. 

These priorities matter because they promote accountability, financial sustainability, and real-world readiness—ensuring every student has the tools to succeed. By working collaboratively, we can build a stronger, more equitable school system. 

Q: How will you approach budgetary decisions to ensure the district remains financially responsible while enhancing educational quality?   

MENDOZA: As a school board member, I will approach budgetary decisions with transparency, efficiency, and student success as top priorities. First, I will advocate for data-driven spending—reviewing financial reports, audits, and program outcomes to prioritize funds where they have the greatest academic impact. Second, I will push for cost-saving measures, such as energy-efficient upgrades and shared resources between schools, to redirect savings toward teacher support and classroom needs. Third, I will ensure community input through public hearings and stakeholder surveys, so budgets reflect real priorities. 

Investments will focus on proven strategies, like early literacy programs, career-technical education (CTE), and teacher retention, while avoiding wasteful spending. By maintaining a balanced budget with reserves for emergencies, the district can remain financially stable while improving opportunities for all students. Fiscal responsibility and educational excellence go hand in hand—every dollar must serve our kids’ futures.

While there are no scheduled events at this time, I’m actively listening to our community—whether at local gatherings, school functions, or through one-on-one conversations.
