Hickey, Vikings steamroll Corvallis

BIGFORK — Treker Hickey wasted little time to shine in Bigfork’s 52-0 win over the Corvallis Blue Devils, the senior running back powering his way into the end zone for two first-half touchdowns on Friday night.
“It feels good, coming off a game like last week and especially going into next week against Dillon,” said Hickey. “We still need to be more physical and have a better mentality in practice going forward, we’ve got to have more grit.”
Bigfork was a stone wall all night, holding Corvallis to 18 total yards and scoring two touchdowns on the defensive side of the ball.
“We were just preaching to our backers and safeties to come down and fly around, and you know what? They did it. I'm excited about it,” coach Hunter Johnson said.
After a slow opening drive from Bigfork, the Vikings forced the Blue Devils to punt and when they got the ball back, the gears started turning. Quarterback Cole Schmit connected with tight end Austin Savik for a 48-yard strike down the sideline, setting up Hickey’s first score and soon the hosts were up 8-0.
After a 20-yard punt return from Rye Rodriguez, Schmit found Tamret Savik and Tayden West on 14-yard passes to get Bigfork back on the goal line. Hickey rammed his way into the end zone to extend the lead 14-0.
Bigfork forced another Blue Devils punt to start the second quarter. Facing a third-and-13 from their own 39-yard line, Schmit had his best throw of the night to Savik for a 58-yard gain that led to Schmit walking into the end zone untouched, giving the Vikings a 22-0 lead.
The Vikings were coming off a 28-7 loss to Frenchtown.
“(Last week) we didn’t play football the way we should have played. This week, the boys came out and translated their practice onto the field. They really stepped up tonight and it started in the run game. Cole threw some great balls to our playmakers and that’s what we have to do,” Vikings offensive coordinator Connor Coleman said.
Bigfork scored two more touchdowns in the final minute of the first half. Schmit found Ollie Buzzell on a 28-yard pass; Buzzell juked and jived his way around the Blue Devils to extend the lead 30-0. Two plays later, Tamret Savik housed an interception 20 yards to start the unstopped clock for the remainder of the game. Bigfork went into the half up 38-0.
Starters for Bigfork were taken out in the second half and only four offensive possessions were played before the game was over.
Schmit ended his night with 162 yards passing. Hickey finished with 82 total yards and two touchdowns.
Next week Bigfork travels to Beaverhead County, where Vikings head coach Hunter Johnson will face his alma mater, the Beavers.
