PREP SOCCER: Sandpoint boys, girls drop matches against Coeur d’Alene

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 5, 2025 11:45 AM

BOYS

Coeur d'Alene 2, Sandpoint 1

SANDPOINT — Sophomore exchange student Alvaro Santos scored on a through ball from sophomore Pax Longanecker during the 74th minute, but the Bulldogs rally fell just short of the Vikings in a 6A/5A Inland Empire League showdown Thursday night at War Memorial Field.

"I thought that we started the first half slow and then played our way into the game, which was eventually very close and a tightly contested match between two good teams," Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. "It could have gone either way."

A couple of goals by the Bulldogs that were called offsides and some defensive mistakes proved to be the difference.

"We were pushing for that second goal, but just couldn't quite get it over the line," coach Anderson said. "I'm happy with how the boys fought, all the way to the end."

Junior goalkeeper Landon Brinkmeier had fives saves for Sandpoint (5-1), which will look to get back to their winning ways when Lakeland comes to War Memorial Field Tuesday for a 5A Inland Empire League matchup.

First half — 1, CDA, Isaac Lowder (Brett Johnson), 15'. Second half — 2, CDA, Isaac Lowder (Blake Wise), 48'. 3, SPT, Alvaro Santos (Pax Longanecker), 74'.

Shots on goal: CDA — 7. SPT — 7.

Saves: CDA — Orion Burns 6. SPT — Landon Brinkmeier 5.

GIRLS

Coeur d'Alene 2, Sandpoint 1

COEUR d'ALENE — Senior Elia Howard scored her first goal of the season during the 48th minute off a pass from junior Bayah Ratigan, but the Lady Bulldogs conceded two first-half goals in their 6A/5A Inland Empire League road loss to the Lady Vikings Thursday night.

Junior goalkeeper Izzy Stark put together another stellar performance with 16 saves, including a shutout in the second half.

"Proud of the girls to keep playing after giving up two goals in the first half," Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "... Hopefully we can build off a shutout in the second half."

The Lady Bulldogs fell to Coeur d'Alene by a score of 3-0 to open the season this year.

Sandpoint (1-3-1) travels to Lakeland Tuesday for a 5A Inland Empire League matchup.

First half — 1, CDA, Greer Scott (unassisted), 2'. 2, CDA, Izzy Grimmett (penalty kick), 18'. Second half — 3, SPT, Elia Howard (Bayah Ratigan), 48'.
