Trojans fall to Sandpoint on late field goal

SANDPOINT — The Post Falls Trojans fell behind Sandpoint by 17 points after the first quarter Friday night, then battled back to tie the game twice. 

Sandpoint drove the length of the field in the final five minutes, and Brock Yarbrough kicked a 24-yard field goal with 25 seconds left to lift the Bulldogs past the Trojans 34-31 in nonleague play at Barlow Stadium. 

Sandpoint (3-0) led 17-0 after the first quarter, before Post Falls (1-1) scored 24 points in the second quarter to tie it 24-all at the half. 

Marshall Tomlinson ran for a pair of touchdowns for Post Falls, Philip Schmitt threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Connor Carver, and Bradyn Singleton kicked a 32-yard field goal with 2 seconds left in the half. 

Tomlinson’s second TD run, from 10 yards out, was set up by a 65-yard run by Brandon Felix. 

“Our kids responded after falling down 17-0 on the road in the first quarter,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. "Our defense came up with some big stops at the end to keep us in the game.” 

Post Falls missed a 46-yard field goal on its first drive of the third quarter. 

With Sandpoint leading 31-24 and driving, Makya Quincy of Post Falls came up with an interception in the end zone. The Trojans drove to the tying touchdown, a 4-yard run by Schmidt with 5:44 left. 

Schmitt, a junior, made his first start of the season. 

“For a first start, he played really well,” Bennett said. “He ran the ball well, executed the offense well, threw the ball well.” 

Sandpoint beat Post Falls for the first time since 2021, and just the third time since 2005. It was Sandpoint’s first win over Post Falls at Barlow Stadium since 2004; the Bulldogs’ victory in 2015 was at the Kibbie Dome. 

Post Falls plays host to Eastmont (0-0) of East Wenatchee, Wash., next Friday. Eastmont is scheduled to open its season today at home vs. Bonney Lake.
