Michelle “Mickie” Renee Marvel, 64, of Rathdrum, Idaho, passed away peacefully July 1, 2025, at Kootenai Health following a brief battle with breast cancer. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Chase Middle School at 4747 E. 37th Ave., Spokane, WA 99223.
Mickie was born Feb. 22, 1961, in Clarkston, Wash., to Billy and Marilyn Marvel. She graduated from Asotin-Anatone High School in 1979 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Washington State University in 1983. Passionate about youth development, Mickie was deeply involved in 4-H and FCCLA (formerly FHA) during high school, which sparked a lifelong commitment to supporting young adults. Over her remarkable 42-year teaching career, she inspired countless students and colleagues at schools across Washington and Idaho, including Northport High School, Palouse High School, East Valley High School, Springdale High School, Rathdrum Middle and High School, Spirit Lake Middle School, Chase Middle School and Rogers High School. Mickie was known for staying late to guide students on their FCCLA projects, pouring her heart into helping them excel. Her dedication led many students to compete at the National FCCLA Leadership Conference, where they proudly showcased their skills, a testament to her mentorship.
In 1985, Mickie married John Sell, and together they welcomed their son, Stephen Robert Sell, in 1992. Though they divorced in 2010, Mickie’s bond with Stephen remained a cornerstone of her life. She loved sharing her passion for snow skiing with him, spending cherished weekends at Schweitzer and Mt. Spokane. Mickie also found joy in gardening, cooking and sewing, but her greatest delight came from supporting her friends, students, and community, always offering help with a warm and generous heart. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her.
Mickie was preceded in death by her father and stepmother, Billy and Alice Marvel. She is survived by her son, Stephen Sell; her mother, Marilyn (Ken) O’Donnell; her brothers, Scott (Julie) Marvel and Michael (Dina) Marvel; and her sister, Kathryn (Mike) Sullivan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chase Middle School ASB in Mickie’s memory. A celebration of life will be held at Chase Middle School in Spokane, Wash., on Sept. 13, 2025, at 1 p.m.
