NIC ROUNDUP: Ferrin leads Cardinals to unbeaten finish at home tourney

COEUR d’ALENE — Allie Ferrin, a sophomore from University High in Spokane Valley, had 12 kills and six digs for North Idaho College in a 23-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-18 win over Highland College of Des Moines, Wash., in the North Idaho College Invitational at Christianson Gymnasium on Saturday.
Freshman Cynthia Reyes-Valencia had eight kills, sophomore Rylie Dolven 16 assists for NIC (6-5) against Highline (5-7).
Against College of the Rockies, Ferrin had 14 kills and Dolven 14 assists for the Cardinals in a 25-12, 25-14, 25-23 win over the Avalanche of Cranbrook, British Columbia.
NIC (7-5) returns to action against Spokane Colleges at Spokane Falls Community College on Sept. 17.

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Once sophomore McKenzie White used her head, the Cardinals got going offensively.
White scored on a header of a Kaylee Smith pass as the Cardinals beat the Giadiators in the Scenic West Athletic Conference opener for both programs. Smith finished with two goals in the first half for NIC.
“McKenzie really got us kickstarted,” NIC coach Kellsi Parson said. “Her second goal was a great goal and Molly (McClennan) played a great ball to her. Our girls on the back line really communicated well. It was just a good all-around team performance.”
NIC (1-2-1) travels to Truckee Meadows of Reno, Nev., on Thursday.

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Daniel Gutierrez, a sophomore from Salt Lake City, had two goals for the Cardinals in a win over the Gladiators in the Scenic West Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
“We were very happy with the contribution of each player,” NIC coach Brad Williams said. “We had 22 guys travel, and they all played and gave us a great effort. They played as hard as they could and it was a good team performance.”
NIC (5-1) travels to Truckee Meadows of Reno, Nev., on Thursday.
