BOISE, Idaho — On Saturday, several collegiate football teams from Washington completed their second week of the season. Some saw success, while others fell short.

Eastern Washington

According to a statement by EWU Athletics, the Broncos seized the momentum quickly, scoring 14 points in the first five minutes of the game. Boise State put up 20 points in the first quarter and had the game quickly under control. The Eagles broke through in the second quarter, as Jared Taylor engineered a 10-play, 62-yard drive, culminating in a Taylor touchdown run. The Broncos answered right back with a quick touchdown and tacked on a late field goal to go into halftime with a 23-point lead.

“There were some bright spots, but not a lot of highlights. We’ll have to watch the film, but we did not play a clean game defensively,” Head Coach Aaron Best said. “We didn’t knock any balls out and missed some tackles. Offensively was not complimentary either. We did not stay on the field on third downs. Punting was inconsistent and we can’t keep putting the defense in between the 40s. We had a short week, and we’ll take tomorrow off, then look at the game on Sunday.”

Boise State’s offense was in rhythm as they scored another touchdown in the third to go up by 30. EWU scored its second touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Broncos' lead was too much to overcome. For the game, Boise St. recorded 637 yards of total offense, balanced between 328 on the ground and 309 in the air. Eastern finished with 293 yards, with 176 passing and 117 rushing.

Central Washington Wildcats

The Wildcats competed with the University of Montana Grizzlies in the first half before it slipped away in the second half and lost 42-17 on the road, CWU Athletics said in a statement.

“I’m proud of the guys for their battle tonight,” the statement said. “They battled for four quarters and gave it their all and I’m incredibly proud of the way they represented the team and CWU tonight. There were a number of positives to take away from tonight, as well as some negatives that we are looking forward to changing into positives as we turn our attention to our Lone Star Conference opener against West Texas A&M.”

Kennedy McGill concluded the game, completing seven of 16 passes for 76 yards, two interceptions, and one touchdown. He added 39 rushing yards on 13 attempts. Phillips and Taylor led the rushing charge with 69 and 66 yards, respectively, with Phillips logging a touchdown.

Grable led the receiving corps with three receptions for 43 yards, while Camden Loidhamer had two receptions for 14 yards and one touchdown.

The crimson and black will have a week off to prepare for their Lone Star Conference opener against West Texas A&M (0-2). The Wildcats host the Buffaloes for the LSC opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. on Steve Hertling Field at Tomlinson Stadium.

Washington State University

Washington State redshirt sophomore quarterback Jaxon Potter threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, and the Cougars rode a dominant defensive effort to capture a 36-13 Homecoming win against the San Diego State Aztecs, according to a statement by WSU Athletics.

San Diego State scored the opening touchdown of the contest, a 35-yard pass from quarterback Jayden Denegal to Jacob Bostick five minutes into the game; however, the Cougars' defense stiffened, shutting down the Aztecs the rest of the first half, only allowing 30 total yards.

For the game, the Cougar defense held San Diego State to 215 total yards and 10 first downs. Meanwhile, the WSU’s offense racked up nearly 400 total yards, including 139 yards rushing

The Cougars hit the road for the first time this season against North Texas on Sept. 13 with a kickoff at 12:30 p.m.

University of Washington

Jonah Coleman rushed for a career-high five touchdowns as Washington beat UC Davis 70-10 on Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium, UW Athletics wrote in a statement.

Coleman tied the modern program record set by Corey Dillon in 1996 against UCLA and Hugh McElhenny in 1950 against Washington State on a 5-yard rushing touchdown early in the third quarter. Ervin Daily set the school’s all-time mark with seven rushing touchdowns against Whitman in 1919. Coleman, who had rushed for three touchdowns in a game twice previously in his collegiate career, bested that total before halftime.

He also finished the evening with his seventh career 100-yard rushing game at Washington. Coleman had 15 carries for 111 yards. Coleman got the Huskies on the board with a 15-yard TD run after Washington forced a three-and-out from the Aggies. Midway through the first quarter, Coleman again plunged into the end zone, this time from a yard out.

Demond Williams Jr., who had 254 yards passing, also ran for an 8-yard score prior to another rushing touchdown by Coleman early in the second quarter. Coleman made it four rushing touchdowns before halftime with a 7-yard scamper.

The Huskies tied a program record with 70 points. Following a bye, UW travels to Washington State on Sept. 20 for the Boeing Apple Cup.
