PREP SWIMMING: Frosh Ford grabs gold in varsity debut

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. MOSCOW — Freshman Andrew Ford placed first out of 18 swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 6.30 seconds and the Sandpoint boys finished second out seven scoring teams at their season-opening swim meet, the Inland Empire League Icebreaker, held Saturday at the University of Idaho Swim Center.
Individually, Ford was also second in the 200 IM (2:15.38) and was a part of the Bulldogs' winning 200 medley relay (1:51.19), which also included sophomores Lou Foust, Max Brown and Bodi Demmons.
Ford then combined with Foust and seniors Kale Wright and McCoy Jensen to take second in the 200 free relay (1:35.50). Demmons, Jensen, Brown and Wright took home a silver in the 400 free relay (3:38.86) as well.
Demmons won the 100 back (1:00.47), Wright added second-place finishes in both the 50 free (23.16) and 100 free (50.66) and Foust clinched second in the 100 back (1:00.57) for Sandpoint, which had 124 points in total.
On the girls side, senior Mia Driggs beat out 26 other swimmers to win the 50 free in 26.30 seconds and was third out of 24 in the 100 free (59.61) for the Lady Bulldogs, which placed third out of six scoring teams with 89 points.
Driggs, along with junior Reina Montecchi and freshmen Athena de Leeuw and Alivia Storms captured silver in the 200 free relay (1:49.31).
Montecchi was second in the 100 free (59.56) while Storms contributed a third-place finish in the 100 breast (1:17.16) for Sandpoint, which returns to the pool Saturday for a meet at the Kroc Center in Coeur d'Alene.
