PREP VOLLEYBALL: Sandpoint gets block going in 3-1 win over Lake City
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 11 months, 1 week AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 9, 2025 10:15 PM
Sandpoint 3, Lake City 1
COEUR d'ALENE — Disciplined.
That's the word Sandpoint High head coach Piper Wahlin used to describe her defense, which tallied 15 total blocks as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Timberwolves in four sets (25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 27-25) for 6A/5A Inland Empire League victory Tuesday night at Lake City High.
Senior Gretta Beck collected a season-high 24 digs and junior Tacey Tajan put up a career-high four blocks to lead the way.
"Our defense was anchored by Gretta Beck and Belen Gonzales, who both made incredible plays," coach Wahlin said. "Gretta showed up the way I always knew she could and played relentlessly through every point."
Senior Hazel Pierce and junior Marlee Lane recorded 10 kills apiece for Sandpoint, which last beat Lake City during their 2023 season opener by the same score.
Wahlin said her setters, freshman Averi Mire and sophomore Breecyn Morton, were instrumental in getting Pierce and Lane the right touches.
"Great decisions by both Averi and Breecyn made a huge difference and allowed our hitters to go up and be much more effective with our attacking," Wahlin said.
Sandpoint (2-5) will look to build on the big win on Thursday, Sept. 18 when they host Lakeland for a 5A Inland Empire League showdown at Les Rogers Court.

"We went into tonight with a goal to better the ball and be intense on defense; we have a saying this year, 'nothing surprises us'...," Clark Fork High head coach Lyndsie Kiebert-Carey said. "I think the girls did well with that tonight. Serving spots was very successful for us."
Hoy added four digs, senior Piper Scarlett three kills and four aces, and senior Azlyn Anderson four aces of her own for the Lady Cats, which worked in their entire lineup in the win.
