The Bigfork High School golf teams tested themselves against some of the top competition in western Montana last week, highlighted by solid performances at both the Whitefish Invitational on Sept. 3 and the Steve Hullett Invitational at Eagle Bend on Sept. 4.
On the boys’ side, the Vikings finished seventh in Whitefish with a team score of 363 before bouncing back with a 10th-place finish at their home course with a 372. Leading the way was Mason Peterson, who carded an 82 at Whitefish to tie for 11th overall in a field that featured several of the state’s top returning golfers, including Polson’s defending state champion Max Milton. At Eagle Bend, sophomore Keenan Voelker stepped up for the Vikings, shooting an 83 to tie for 15th and give Bigfork a top-15 individual finish in its home tournament.
The girls’ squad turned in back-to-back sixth-place team finishes, posting a 485 at Whitefish and a 450 at Eagle Bend. Senior standout Keegan Campbell shined for the Valkyries, breaking into the top 10 both days. She tied for sixth in Whitefish with a 99 and followed it up with one of her best competitive rounds, an 86 at Eagle Bend that placed her second overall behind Whitefish’s Karlee Brown.
Campbell leads Bigfork at Polson Invitational
Senior Keegan Campbell continued her strong start to the fall season, leading the Bigfork Valkyries with a top-15 finish at the Polson Invitational on Monday at Polson Bay Golf Course.
Campbell carded a 99 on the par-72 course, tying for 13th alongside Polson’s Harlie Fischer and Corvallis’s Kirsten Race. Her consistency on the back nine helped steady the Valkyries, who finished seventh in the girls’ team standings with a score of 465.
The girls’ field was led by Whitefish’s Karlee Brown and Hamilton’s Cameron Burnett, who shared medalist honors at 77. Whitefish won the team championship with a 358, well ahead of runner-up Dillon (381).
