The city dump had caught fire. The Red Bridge also had a fire in one of the planks. The dump burned for more than a day, but the Red Bridge was put out quickly.

Glacier National Park was considering 30 miles of new trail that would become the Park’s “Skyline Trail.” At the time, the new section would skirt Jackson and Blackfoot glaciers and then head to Triple Divide Pass. The route was never completed.

There were plenty of topics on tap for Glacier National Park of concern, including coal mining proposals in the Flathead; pollution from the Anaconda Aluminum plant and spraying herbicides on the international boundary.

Hiker Clare Spurgis was traveling by foot from Michigan to Alaska with a kitten on top of his pack. He found the cat along his route. Spurgis said he had another cat, but it took off after a crane and never returned.

City Manager Roger Hopkins was given a $4,500 raise by the city council on a 5-2 vote. His salary went from $30,000 to $34,500 annually, which was closer at the time to what other city managers in the valley were making.

Jim and Kathy Knapp gave the newspaper a first-hand account of helping two grizzly bear mauling victims on the Grinnell Glacier Trail in Glacier National Park. Johan and Jenna Otter ran into the sow with cubs at close range and had severe injuries. The Knapps helped them until emergency personnel arrived.

Glacier National Park was going to use herding dogs to shoo mountain goats and bighorn sheep from the Logan Pass parking lot. The critters attracted to the lot because of antifreeze and other salts dripping off of cars.
