PREP SOCCER: Sandpoint boys take down Lakeland by 6-1 decision
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 11 months, 1 week AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 10, 2025 2:00 PM
BOYS
Sandpoint 6, Lakeland 1
SANDPOINT — Senior Logan McGrann scored on penalty kicks in both halves, junior Knox Williams and senior Asher Hazan scored their first goals of the season and the Bulldogs tallied six unanswered goals to defeat the Hawks Tuesday night in a 5A Inland Empire League match at War Memorial Field.
Sandpoint got off to a slow start, with Lakeland scoring the first goal of the game on a header during the 12th minute. However, sophomore Pax Longanecker was able to respond during the 25th minute off a nice through ball from senior Jack Treman, who had a team-high two assists in total. A minute later, McGrann, drawing a double team, was slide tackled in the box, and eventually buried the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom right corner of the net for the 2-1 advantage, which stood until intermission.
Coming out of halftime, the Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders. During the 44th minute, senior Huxley Hall, off a free kick from Treman, was in the right place at the right time as the ball skipped past two Hawks defenders. Hall took advantage of the opportunity and put his ninth goal of the season into the back of the net. Not too long after, Williams, off a shot that rebounded off the right post, cleaned things up to make it a 4-1 game by the time the 45th minute rolled around. Senior Asher Hazan scored during the 71st minute after a scramble in front of the net after a shot hit the crossbar and McGrann fired in another penalty kick during the 79th minute for the 6-1 victory.
"The slow start is something we need to correct going forward," Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. "That being said, I'm happy with the adjustments we made at halftime and with the team effort we showed in the second half to get back on top and dominate the game."
Junior goalkeeper Landon Brinkmeier had six saves for Sandpoint (6-1), which will host Lake City on Thursday for a 6A/5A Inland Empire League game. The Bulldogs downed the Timberwolves by a score of 1-0 to open the season this year.
"We need to build off the momentum in our second half tonight, especially with how well we moved the ball and all the chances we created," coach Anderson said. "Lake City is going to be a very difficult match."

"We are stilling having trouble finding the back of the net," Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "When we get the ball down and move it quickly, we look good. We have to take a mental reset and look forward to the next games. We have still have the second half of the season to put some wins together."
