RATHDRUM — It’s been a long time coming for the Lakeland girls soccer team, but it happened on Tuesday.
Senior Paige Rose scored on a kick from just outside the penalty box in the 31st minute, and the Hawks went on to beat the visiting Sandpoint Bulldogs 1-0 in a 5A Inland Empire League match at Sunrise Rotary Field.
It was Lakeland’s first win over Sandpoint since winning 2-2 (3-2 on penalty kicks) in a district tournament match on Oct. 12, 2006 in Sandpoint.
“It’s been my goal to get a win over one of the big league schools since I’ve been here,” fifth-year Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge said. “It’s huge for this team. We’ve come a long way. I’m really proud of these girls and how far we’ve come. It’s a great win and well needed. Sandpoint’s a really, really good team.”
Lakeland limited Sandpoint to five shots on goal, getting four of its own.
“Karstyn Kiefer is a powerhouse in the back for us,” Rogge said. “She’s such a presence and can make plays. Our defense really shut them down. For Reesa (Saxe, a senior goalkeeper) to have a shutout, she did a good job and her teammates really stepped up to make it happen.”
Lakeland (3-2, 2-1 5A IEL) hosts Coeur d’Alene Charter on Saturday.
Sandpoint (1-4-1, 1-2-1) travels to Mt. Spokane on Friday.

In the second half, we had some great combinations and played a little harder compared to the first half. We were definitely pleased with how we changed some things at the half.”

“We were able to change our lineup and do a better job connecting passes,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “I liked how our midfield and top line were able to string a few things together and get a couple of goals early in each half. Our back line was also solid, allowing for us to get everyone who suited up some time tonight. Bonners has some fast kids and some good athletes. When they connect, they’re tough to deal with. But we were able to hold them off.”
