I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | September 11, 2025 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Born and raised in Sandpoint, JD McElroy had an idea that would offer individuals another option in terms of home defense and personal protection.

A unique pepper spray attachment for shotguns, carbines, and rifles, the device offered by his new business, Sublethal Defense, gives individual another option before lethal force. The attachment gives users a non-lethal option, enhancing safety and providing a crucial last chance measure in threatening situations.

Aimed primarily at home defense and personal protection, McElroy said the pepper spray attachment helps individuals to de-escalate confrontations by giving them options before lethal force, making it an essential tool for responsible gun owners. "The product is designed to give users a 'last chance' option prior to using lethal force, providing an additional layer of protection and a means to avoid escalating a situation unnecessarily," McElroy said. "The company behind this innovation is dedicated to promoting safety and effective defense strategies while ensuring that users can protect themselves and their loved ones responsibly."

McElroy, who graduated from Sandpoint High School, wanted to give back to the community that helped raised him.

"Bonner County also aligns with my core beliefs about God, the Second Amendment, and the values of first responders and our military," he said. "This community reflects my commitment to empowering civilians with options when faced with the difficult decision of whether to use lethal force. By providing innovative defense solutions, I aim to support individuals in protecting themselves while upholding these important principles. Bonner County represents a place where these values can thrive."

The company's goal is to give both citizens and first responders with innovative and reliable tools that protect life, preserve dignity, and empower better decision-making in moments that matter most, McElroy said. "Last Chance" — the pepper spray attachment device — is designed to offer a non-lethal option during critical situations.

The company also offers a pepper spray gel and other merchandise such as hats and shirts. Last Chance is available in select retail stores, including Smitty’s Outpost and Ranch and Home, with plans to expand to even more locations.

"Our next step is to develop a tour aimed at demonstrating how Last Chance can support our first responders, law enforcement, and corrections personnel by providing them with effective less-lethal options," McElroy said. "Through these demonstrations, we hope to showcase the importance and functionality of our products in enhancing safety and decision-making."

His goal for Sublethal Defense is to provide options in terms of using lethal force, giving individuals confidence and helping them feel they aren't backed into a corner.

"By offering alternatives that promote de-escalation, we aim to ensure that individuals have the necessary tools at their disposal to manage high-stress situations," McElroy said. "Our focus is on making effective, non-lethal solutions readily accessible, allowing users to handle confrontations in a way that prioritizes safety and minimizes the need for extreme measures. Ultimately, we strive to create a culture of responsible defense where individuals feel prepared and capable of making better decisions when it matters most."

McElroy said the patent-pending device is the first of its kind, offering both a life-changing and life-saving idea that is both reliable and durable. The company recently celebrated its first launch party, propelling it toward securing a utility patent. He hopes that, within the next year, Sublethal Defense will save lives as it provides individuals with the tools they need to handle critical situations safely and effectively.

"Sublethal Defense exists to provide everyday citizens and first responders with an innovative, reliable tool that protects life, preserves dignity, and empowers better decision-making in the moments that matter most," McElroy said.
