Thelma (Pete) Shamblin (90) Feb. 7, 1935 — Sept. 7, 2025.

Thelma was born to Charles and Jewel Peterson on Feb. 7, 1935, in Hobart, Ind. The family moved to Homeland, Calif., when Thelma was 3. She spent her childhood in Homeland, growing up with two older brothers and all the small-town freedom any adventurous girl could ask for. She loved “running around” with her best friend, JoAnn, who later also became her sister-in-law.

In 1955, Thelma married the love of her life, Hershel. They moved to Riverside, Calif., where they began raising their two sons, Mike and Pat. The family enjoyed camping, boating, fishing and attending large extended family gatherings.

In 1970, Hershel and Thelma decided to move their family to Coeur d’Alene, seeking a small-town atmosphere to finish raising their boys. The beauty of the area and the easy access to nature, so they could continue their pursuit of all things outdoors, sealed the deal.

After the boys were raised, Thelma and Hershel continued to have many fun adventures together, traveling the country in a motorhome. Eventually, they became grandparents and continued to share their love of the outdoors with their three grandsons.

Thelma became a widow in 2007, after 52 years of marriage. Although she missed Hershel deeply for the rest of her life, she continued to pursue joy, spending time with family and friends and traveling with the Rambling Rovers. Thelma was known for her ready smile and genuine laugh. She loved people, and even in her final years, her caregivers commented about how much they enjoyed having her greet them each day with a smile.

Thelma was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandma. She was predeceased by her husband, Hershel, and son Mike. She leaves her son, Pat (Angi), and grandsons Casey, Ryan and Brett.

There will be a private, graveside service held in Coeur d’Alene. The family wishes to thank the staff and administration of Sunshine Health Facilities Memory Care in Spokane Valley for their care of Thelma. We all had peace of mind because you were caring for our mom and grandma. Yates Funeral Home is entrusted with the care of final arrangements. Please visit Thelma’s memorial and sign her online guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
