There were sparks at Legend Stadium Thursday, both on the field and in the sky.
In the end, the sky won out (again) as the first crosstown flag football game of 2025 was postponed early in the second half with Glacier leading 14-7.
No official resumption date was announced, but Bravettes’ coach Jess Henley said that they would try to resume at the earliest possible time that officials are available.
Two weeks ago lightning shortened Flathead’s boys football opener at Legends; it was declared a no-contest.
Hensley’s Flathead team was in position to score before the postponement, driving down to the 10-yard line.
“When we went into this game we just wanted to compete,” Hensley said. “That’s what we did and I am so proud of them. We can clean some things up on defense, we let some things past us which we normally don’t let past, but we are competing and I am very pleased with what I saw.”
The Bravettes’ touchdown came from senior Julia Kay’s pass to freshman Lexi Herion that tied the game at seven.
“We work big on our culture and it’s just next person up,” Hensley said. “Literally every class is represented in our starting offense and starting defense and they are a team and they are a family.”
The Bravettes didn’t own a lead, as the Wolfpack jumped in front on their opening possession — also delayed by lightning.
Faced with a fourth-and-5 out of the delay, senior quarterback Karley Allen stepped up to run for the first down. She then found Addison Kauffman for the touchdown on the next play.
“Karley is just irreplaceable in the fact of her experience,” Wolfpack coach Mark Kessler said. “It’s a new game and she has been her since its birth, and to grow with that as she has grown as a player. She is a coach on the field.
“I love that her competitiveness isn’t something that causes her angst. For her, it drives her.”
Herion intercepted Allen as the Wolfpack looked to score again in the second quarter.
Glacier got one more chance after forcing a Bravette 3-and-out in the final two minutes. Allen broke off a 26-yard run, then found Remi Osler for the go-ahead score with one second left in the first half.
“We are a young team and we are still learning, but we are showing that we are able to overcome adversity at times,” Kessler said. “We are pretty relentless, and I am real proud of the way they are coming along.”
