Superior firepower too much for Troy Trojans, 68-20

The Troy Trojans showed flashes of fight on the road Friday night, but Superior’s firepower proved too much as the Bobcats pulled away for a 68-20 win.

Superior (1-1) jumped out quickly, with Richards finding Cataldo for a 17-yard touchdown and then handing off to Milender for a short scoring run to make it 14-0. 

Troy answered when Maddux Stow hit on a short scoring pass, trimming the margin. The Bobcats countered with a 36-yard touchdown strike from Cataldo to Quinlan, but the Trojans again battled back. Quarterback Carson Orr connected with Gunnar Fisher on a 9-yard touchdown pass just before the end of the first quarter, cutting the deficit to 22-12.

That was as close as Troy would get. Superior strung together four unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, including runs from Richards and Milender plus a 35-yard interception return by Richards. By halftime, the Bobcats held a commanding 44-12 lead.

Superior added to its total in the second half with a 60-yard scoring run from Cataldo and a 58-yard touchdown pass from Hughes to Talbot in the fourth.

Troy’s highlight after the break came midway through the fourth quarter when Orr and Fisher hooked up for a 49-yard touchdown, with Fisher also pulling in the two-point conversion. Fisher finished with two receiving touchdowns and a conversion, while Orr threw for a pair of scores.

The Trojans (0-2) host St. Regis at 7 p.m. Friday.
