Two very young Libby soccer teams took the pitch against Stevensville last Saturday at J. Neils Memorial Park and played well in narrow losses.

The Yellowjackets boys team was one of Montana’s best in 2024, reaching the Class A state semifinals where they lost to Whitefish, 4-3. That was a week after Stevi beat Libby in the state quarters, 4-1.

Saturday, the Yellowjackets led 1-0 before Loggers senior Kale Hall scored to tie the game. Stevi scored one more time in a 2-1 win, but it was much more competitive than both games a year ago when the Yellowjackets won both games by a combined 12-2.

The boys squad has five freshmen on the roster of 17 players.

The Loggers girls squad is even younger with six eighth-graders and three freshmen on a roster of 16.

Sophomore Zoe Bernall scored about three minutes into the second half to give Libby a 1-0 lead. The Lady Yellowjackets ended up winning 3-1, but the game was still extremely competitive.

It was also the first home game for new coaches Gio Cano and Bella Hollingsworth.

Libby’s squads opened the season the week before with road wins over Frenchtown. The boys won 2-0 and the girls, 4-2. The girls (1-1) have already equaled last year’s win total.

Both teams played at Thompson Falls Thursday and return home Saturday to host perennial state powerhouse Whitefish. The boys begin at 11 a.m. and the girls at 1 p.m.
