PREP ROUNDUP: Yearout powers St. Maries past Kellogg in CIL showdown

ST. MARIES — Senior halfback Aiden Yearout ran for 72 yards and four touchdowns, three coming in the second quarter for the St. Maries Lumberjacks in a 39-14 win over the Kellogg Wildcats in a Central Idaho League opener at St. Maries High on Friday. 

After senior Isaiah Gustaffe returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown for St. Maries (3-1), Kellogg (1-1) scored a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead. Yearout scored on a 41-yard run before the end of the first quarter to make it 14-12 Kellogg after the first. 

Yearout scored from 3, 1 and 5 yards out in the second quarter as the Lumberjacks took a 32-14 halftime lead. St. Maries capped the scoring on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jack Barta to Brock Barta in the fourth quarter. 

Jack Barta threw for 313 yards for St. Maries, which travels to Moscow next Friday. 

Porter Lewis scored two touchdowns for Kellogg, which visits Timberlake next Friday.

“Cash Lund had a great night on both sides of the ball for us tonight,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “We played all three of our backs tonight (Griffin Tamagni, Peyton Sardinha and Dre Smith), and they all played really well. We were fortunate to come out with a win.” 

Lakeland (4-0) travels to Post Falls next Friday. 

West Valley is 1-1.

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Colt Value returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown for the visiting Vandals in a win over the Tigers at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field. 

“We did not come out very good in the first half,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “We came out pretty flat and they just played harder. McCall-Donnelly's a good team and you can’t come out and play like that.” 

Timberlake junior quarterback Ryker Brennan ran for a pair of touchdowns in the second half. 

“We just can’t seem to get stuff rolling and we’ve got to go back to the drawing board and get back to work,” Amos said.

Timberlake (0-4) hosts Kellogg next Friday.

Sophomore quarterback Cooper Miller threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for Wallace (3-0), which led 52-0 at halftime. 

Wallace travels to St. John-Endicott next Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Finley Wright scored two second-half goals for the Timberwolves in a nonleague win over the Bullpups on Thursday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex. 

“We struggled in the first half trying to gain possession,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “Gonzaga Prep controlled a big part of the first half. We adjusted at halftime and played well. Our backline was solid all day. Finley put away two quality chances, which was great to see.” 

Lake City (6-0-1) travels to Coeur d’Alene for a 6A Inland Empire League match on Tuesday. 

“Overall, we keep trying to find ways to win games,” Ruchti said. “We have had many injuries that have demanded others to step up. We look forward to the competition in the coming weeks.”
