Sept. 14, 1975 - VETERANS DAY RESTORED

Congress has completed work on a bill to restore Nov. 11, the day the armistice was signed after World War I, as Veterans Day. President Ford is expected to sign the measure. At the urging of veterans groups, the House approved 410-6 a bill to eliminate the three-day holiday weekend in October.

SHOPPING CENTER DELAYED AGAIN

A five-month-old request for a zone change for a proposed shopping center may be a month older by the time the city council meets next. A motion to approve the zone change for North Idaho Foods, Inc., of Sandpoint, failed for lack of a second and the council turned their attention to adopting a new ordinance providing for more restricted commercial uses adjacent to, or in, residential areas, a process that will be at least 30 days in the making. The group first approached the City Planning and Zoning Commission in April requesting to rezone from residential to commercial the west side of Fourth Avenue from Larch Street to Poplar. Opposition from residents living within 300 feet of the area centers on the aesthetic qualities of the neighborhood, possible escalation of property taxes and the potential for locating a tavern in the area.

COUNTY FAIR BRIEFS

Viewing the fair together were Mrs. Mark Hunt and her neighbor, Mrs. E.E. Bingham, both of this city.

Mrs. N.E. Nuberg was waiting in the shade near the church booths for her friends, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Nelson, to join her for dinner at the Lutheran booth Friday noon. All three are Bonner county old timers.

Mrs. P.D. Brackett and Mrs. Ina Rathbun from Grouse Creek spent Friday at the fairgrounds.
