Joseph Elton McKinnon, known to most as Joe, Dad or Grandpa, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2025. He was born in Wenatchee, Wash., on May 31, 1934. Joe attended Chelan High School, where he excelled in basketball and football and was known as the “Unmovable Object.” Later, he entered Washington State College. Go Cougs! He majored in business and was an active member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Joe then married his childhood sweetheart, Marjory “Marge” Harris, in 1954. After graduation, they moved to Portland, Ore., where they spent 45 wonderful years. He worked in berry processing and later used his business degree with the U.S. Bank in management, then as a vice president.

Joe and Marge had three children. Jill Siegel from Eagle River, Alaska, Steve McKinnon from Tualatin, Ore., and Jan McKinnon of Bliss, Idaho.

After retirement, Joe and Marge enjoyed their time golfing, traveling the world, and spending time with family, friends and of course the grandkids. They spent their winters in Gold Canyon, Ariz., at Mountain Brook Community. Marge unexpectedly passed away in 2008 from complications of a stroke.

In Joe’s later years, he moved with his long-time companion, Donna Thomas, to Coeur d’Alene for the summers, where they enjoyed river life and boating. He was often seen piloting his pontoon boat down the Spokane River. Then back to Arizona for the winter and warmer weather. He continued to love his golf, travel and community neighbors.

Joe is survived by Jill Siegel, Steve McKinnon, Jan McKinnon, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Known for his patience and gentle demeanor, Joe was a man of few words. Those who were fortunate enough to know Joe will remember his beautiful smile and his gentle wave.
