PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene volleyball wins Freeman tourney in first visit

ROCKFORD, Wash. — You never forget your first. 

Coeur d’Alene will never forget its first trip to the Freeman Rip-A-Shot Tournament. 

The Vikings went 5-0 to win the event on Saturday at Freeman High, beating Chelan 25-23, 25-20 in the championship match of the 16-team tournament. 

In pool play, Coeur d’Alene beat Pullman 25-18, 25-14, St. Maries 25-10, 25-6 and Ritzville 22-25, 25-20, 15-9. 

In bracket play, the Vikings beat Mead 25-13, 25-20 in the semis. 

“Each team member contributed to our successful day,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We played with intensity and determination throughout the tournament. Some matches were close and really tested our chemistry and skill, but we battled through together. Our tough defense and aggressive attacks allowed us to come out on top.”

Junior Hannah Shafer had 88 assists and 19 digs on the day for Coeur d’Alene (11-0). Kaylee Paulson added 43 kills and 25 digs, Camryn Farrar 16 kills and 20 digs, Gianna Callari 37 kills, 21 digs and nine blocks, Embree McKeown 26 digs and four aces, Bridget Maiani 46 digs and five aces, Eva Callari 16 assists, Maren Larson 10 blocks and seven kills, Jovie Le eight kills and eight blocks, Marly Sutich 13 kills. 

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lewiston.  

Lake City finished eighth, going 2-3. 

In pool play, the Timberwolves beat Riverside 25-9, 25-10 and Wilbur-Creston 25-14, 25-19, and lost to Mead 25-18, 25-11. 

In the bracket for second-place pool finishers, Lake City lost to Ritzville 13-25, 26-24, 15-11 and lost to Lewis and Clark 25-22, 22-25, 15-11. 

Camrym Woodman had 36 kills, 22 digs and five aces on the day for Lake City (4-7). Kate Moglia had 24 assists, 21 digs and 11 kills, Ella Jeanselme 15 kills, 13 digs and eight aces.  

“Overall, we did some good things today,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “Still working to find consistency with some gaps in the roster due to injuries. Back at it on Monday to prepare for a big week of league matches.” 

Lake City plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday and visits Coeur d’Alene on Thursday. 

St. Maries won one of five matches 

In pool play, the Lumberjacks lost to Ritzville 25-13, 25-10, Coeur d’Alene 25-10, 25-6 and Pullman 25-8, 25-6. 

In bracket play, St. Maries defeated Riverside 25-19, 22-25, then lost to East Valley 25-13, 25-8. 

Taryn Brebner had seven assists, seven digs and two aces on the day for St. Maries (1-8). Dimercia Spooner had 12 kills, five blocks and four aces, Sadie Jones five kills, three digs and three blocks, Letty Smith five kills, four aces and three blocks, Lyssa Watkins nine assists and four aces. 

“It was a very competitive day,” St. Maries coach Tammie Woster said. “At times we stayed in there and showed grit and other times just fell short. It’s about consistency. In the third match we decided to change up rotations. I pulled freshman middle Taylyn Harvey to join us today. I wasn’t sure my plan for her, but I knew she needed to be there.  I wound up putting her in and she gave us 100%. She contributed three kills and three blocks in her first varsity game. Super proud of her.” 

St. Maries travels to Wallace on Tuesday.

Coeur d’Alene JV 

PLUMMER — Senior Kimberly Pluff had seven kills, six aces and five digs as the host Knights beat the Viking junior varsity 25-14, 25-12, 25-22 at Ron Miller Court. 

Tylah Lambert added 10 assists, six kills, five digs and two aces for Lakeside (6-0). Rayna Schatz had five kills and four digs, Ambi Aldrich three kills, Laila Charley five digs, Cassidy Gorr two aces, Saydee Peone four aces, two kills and six digs. 

“Weekend games are always fun,” Lakeside coach Devyn Moore said. “The gym was pretty quiet this afternoon so the girls did a good job keeping momentum and talked pretty well. Kimmie’s aggressive attacks are getting harder and harder each week. She’s aggressive from the front and back row. Rayna covered the net like a beast, from blocking to hitting to covering underneath my hitters. Tylah did a great job finding Pluff and really hustled.” 

Lakeside plays host to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

“We played a complete game today,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “And we needed to. I thought we struggled the last game against Bonners (a 1-0 win on Tuesday), and it was nice to see the boys rebound strongly.” 

Coeur d’Alene Charter (4-0) travels to Timberlake on Monday. 

“I knew warming up we might be in trouble,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “I was surprised by the size of that team. We’d never played them before and looking at the scores, I thought it would a good, tight game. But we didn’t show up to play and they did.”
