PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene girls win at Palouse Ridge invite

PULLMAN — Sophomore Ella Wilson shot a 2-under-par 70 to earn medalist honors as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings won the Palouse Ridge Invitational on Monday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. 

Coeur d’Alene’s girls shot 314, six shots better than Rocky Mountain. 

“Our kids were outstanding today,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. “Our focus was not to worry about beating any individual or team. Rather, our focus was to go out and beat the course, and our kids had a blast doing so. We are so proud of how they performed today.”

Ben Focke of Coeur d’Alene was boys medalist, also shooting 70. 

Mountain View’s boys won with a 299. Lake City and Rocky Mountain tied for second at 306, and Coeur d’Alene shot 312 in the four-team event. 

Trey Lambert and Eli Wilson each shot 75 to lead Lake City’s boys. 

“Kids battled a real tough course today,” Lake City girls coach Corey Owen said. “I’m really proud of the way the boys competed, taking on three of the best teams in the state and holding their own. I’m hoping this gives them a confidence boost with just a few weeks left in the season.”

POST FALLS — Sophomore Claire Ziegler had seven aces and 18 assists as the host Trojans beat the Titans of the Greater Spokane League 25-17, 25-19, 16-25, 25-17 in nonleague play at the Arena. 

Teresa Smith added 13 kills, 13 digs and four aces for Post Falls (3-4). Tiffany Foxx had eight kills, 13 digs and two blocks, Lucy Carr 22 assists and 13 digs, Mia Carr 12 digs, Malia Uemoto two blocks. 

“Today we had some rough spots, but I’m proud of our girls fighting through and finishing the match in four,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Claire did a great job serving and keeping them on their heels, and Piper (Schlotthauer, a junior opposite hitter) was a big spark for us off the bench tonight.” 

University, from Spokane Valley, is 3-1. 

Post Falls plays at Lake City tonight.

Timberlake  

PRIEST RIVER — Amarijana Olivieri had seven kills, 14 digs and three aces for the visiting Tigers in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 nonleague loss to the Spartans. 

Ella Johnsen had 19 digs and an ace for Timberlake (5-7), which went 1-4 at the Freeman Rip-A-Shot Tournament on Saturday in Rockford, Wash. Layla Webb added four kills and three blocks, Willow Mattson nine assists for the Tigers. 

Timberlake visits St. Maries on Thursday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Riley Greene assisted on both goals — by Sofia Peppin in the first half and Reagan Meine early in the second — as the visiting Panthers downed the Tigers in Intermountain League play at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field. 

Merle Kerkhof notched the shutout in goal for Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy (4-1, 4-0 IML). 

“It's always fun to play at Timberlake under the lights,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We've been dealing with some injuries and sore bodies, so we had to adjust the lineup before the game and on the fly during the game, but the girls sure rose to the challenge. Initially we struggled connecting passes but were able to shut enough of Timberlake's offense response down to try and open a few things up to possess after winning the ball back.  Sofia's goal helped us settle into the game a little and play not so frantic for the remainder of the first half and first part of the second half. Reagan's goal of persistence early into the second half helped us feel a little more comfortable with our rearranged lineup. Timberlake put a bunch of pressure on us the last 15 minutes of the game, but everyone on our back line and our keeper stepped up to the challenge.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter travels to St. Maries on Saturday.

Brooks Judd added a goal and an assist for Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-0, 3-0 IML), which returns to action Saturday at St. Maries. 

“We struggled connecting passes today,” Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “Wasn’t our best performance. Our mids, Taylor Smith and Pietro Antollini, stepped up today for us. I was happy to keep a clean sheet.”
