PREP SOCCER: Viking boys fight off smoke, rally past Timberwolves

COEUR d’ALENE — Once the smoke cleared, both offenses got going. 

Visiting Coeur d’Alene just landed its last shot. 

Sophomore midfielder Blake Wise scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick in the 76th minute as the visiting Vikings defeated the Lake City Timberwolves 2-1 in a 6A Inland Empire League game at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex on Tuesday. 

The match was delayed for 15 minutes due to a house fire in the surrounding neighborhood, some 400 feet from the field. Officials stopped the match with 17 minutes remaining in the first half after hearing popping sounds coming from the garage of the home. 

“As coaches, we tried to keep them as engaged with the match as possible,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “When all that happened, they were talking on the sideline about what was working and what wasn’t. It was really cool to see them come back out and play as well to end the half as they had to start it.” 

Lake City took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half on a goal by junior Reese Crawford. 

“This young  squad keeps blowing me away — day after day, game after game,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “The future is bright, and you can feel it coming together piece by piece.”

Sophomore Blake Baune scored on an assist from Jacob Shaporda to even the score in the 70th for Coeur d’Alene. 

“It’s been a theme for us this season,” Harmelink said. “We end up dominating the possession, but that final moment wasn’t cracking until the very end. I was glad to see the boys respond from the adversity and was proud of their resilience after falling behind to come back.” 

It was the first of two league matches between the rivals, with the teams playing again next Tuesday at Viking Field at 6:30 p.m. 

Coeur d’Alene (5-2) faces Lewiston on Thursday at Walker Field. 

Lake City (3-4-1) travels to Moscow on Thursday.

Post Falls travels to Lakeland on Thursday. 

Sandpoint travels to Coeur d’Alene on Saturday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior forward Riley Brazle scored off a deflection in the 27th minute for the Timberwolves in a 6A Inland Empire League win over the Vikings under the lights at Viking Field. 

“It was back and forth a lot,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “I’m super proud of my girls and how they grinded it out. We’re down four starters due to injury and had some younger girls step up, and I couldn’t be prouder. Our girls dug deep, especially in the second half. We had some chances in the second half, but just couldn’t get them in.” 

Coeur d’Alene (4-2-3) hosts Timberlake at the Coeur d’Alene High Soccer Field at 4:30 p.m. 

Lake City (7-0-1) hosts Moscow on Thursday. 

“Their front three players are good, but our defense was really good,” Vredenburg said. “We cleared the ball, and it deflected off a shin guard, and Riley hit a perfect shot. It’s unfortunate, but she took advantage of that opportunity.”

BONNERS FERRY — Senior defender Karstyn Kiefer scored two second-half goals for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Badgers at Bonners Ferry High. 

“We move the ball well and got the ball down the line and were able to score on some crosses,” Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge said. “That was our goal to get more goals off those passes and the girls just played really well together.” 

Lakeland (5-2) travels to Post Falls for a 5A Inland Empire League match on Thursday.
